Hello all, I would like to introduce myself and ask some questions. My name is Kenneth and I am 20. I live in north Texas outside of Dallas. I am only now getting into shooting; I only have a Marlin 795 .22 right now but will probably need to sell in order to get a new rifle. I also don’t have much considering I am still in college and was looking at an AR-15 but to even build your own with the parts I was looking at would be steep for me to get into. I have liked the looks of the AK’s so I think ill get one of these first considering some that I have seen were cheaper then a together RRA lower for a AR. I was looking at Atlantic Firearms, they’re selling a Romanian AK-47 Rifle  .762 x 39 for around $330. One of my questions was that it says they send it to your FFL. When you find one and have them send the rifle to the FFL do you haft to get it from them in person or do they mail it to you, letting you get one farther away from you if one’s near you are hard to find or you don’t trust? The one closest to me is a pawnshop and I do not think that I would trust them as much as somewhere else. Another question that I have is caliber. What is the best to get or average? And last, is there a big difference in where it was made or it’s country? I see there are some from Germany Russia and China. Thank you in advance for any help and I wish that I would be a good addition to this site.

It's best to get a 7.62x39mm AK first then later you can get a 5.45x39mm AK.
I got the 5.45 first but I'm waiting for a 7.62 AK.

Magazines and ammunition are plentiful for the 7.62x39 AKs.

Just find a dealer or pawn shop with a FFl who will do the transfer. You pay Atlantic for the rifle, the dealer doing the transfer will send their FFL to Atlantic, Atlantic will send them the rifle and you pick it up from the dealer ...

If your in Garland, Silver Dollar Pawn on Walnut can do it for you ... Just look a FFL in the Yellow Pages and make a few calls ...

Remember that AK's are based on what you can afford. If you can only afford a Romy then get it. If you can go $450 try to find a Vector. If you want the best, get an Arsenal. There's pretty much an AK for every price range ...

FFLs charge a fee for that service........some do a flat rate, others a percentage of what the firearms cost. so before you commit to having the FFL send in his licence, find out how much the fee is.......otherwise you might be in for a surprise when you go to pick it up. I wouldn't go with anything more then 20 dollars.

your best option is to go to a local gunshow and pick one out........that way you can eyeball and handle the AK before you buy.........some of the WASRs might have canted front sight and/or gas block, when you buy sight unseen, you might be buying one like that.

All good advice above,
and welcome to the board!

although, I would like to suggest getting a ak74,
if your into AR's then that's the AK for you!
You might even find a 223 AK for around $450 or so
and you don't have to worrie about different ammo,
just which one your gonna shoot it in!!

First off thank you all for your help, I think I will save more and go for a Vector. I also went to the hometown forums for Texas and found someone that’s only 4mi from me so I can call them when I save enough. I will most likely hold off on the AR for more than a year so that I can do my concealed handgun classis. It seam’s to me that they are easier to put together so I’m going to try to put that together myself. Thanks again.

Welcome to the forum.

We all know what's it's like to not have the shekels that you'd like to buy all kinds of evil rifles, but, honestly, do what you're thinking about.......save the money.

Spend it now or spend it later on upgrades.......buy the best you can afford and you won't be sorry.

Welcome to the boards.  If you can scrape together the $$$, you won't be sorry if you get a Vector.  AKs in general are a great bang for the buck, and the 7.62x39 caliber is cheap, plentiful, and versatile.  Just don't expect it to be terribly accurate too!

You might look on the Equipment Exchange here for good deals on AKs.  Its almost impossible to "wear out" an AK and there are often very good deals to be had on the EE boards.  If you can find a good deal on one in your state, so much the better!
