Ok, I have an SAR-1 and I believe it has the original FCG still installed in it.  When I pull the charging handle back, I believe the bolt rides on top of the trigger group where it is pointy; you know, the part where the hammer FIRST passes in order to become set to fire?

Anyway, would it be ok/legal for me to file down the tip of that just a bit so the bolt doesn't keep getting hung up on it?  It is getting in the way so much that the action actually remains open and have to mess with it to close.  Others recommend getting a new FCG; I will do that, but dont have the money right now.

Thanks

what makes you think that it is riding on the top of the trigger hook?

Because it is the only piece sticking up the highest in the FCG.  I dont know what else could be holding the action open other than for that piece...

Ok RedHorseman, your last post made me look at it more carefully...

The bolt is actually riding on the hammer.  When the hammer is in the locked position, you can push it down further with your finger- just a little bit.  Im not sure it is supposed to do this.  Is it?  So that is my problem.  Is there a way to get more tension on the hammer so it is held down further than where its at now?

is there any wear on the top of the trigger hook(s)?
if not then its probably the hammer.  and unless you're having the bolt hold open during firing I wouldnt worry about it.

That doesn't seem correct. At least not in a properly assembled AK. For that matter, I'm not sure how you could possibly assemble it to do that. Usually it is the hammer that rides high and causes this.

ETA: Never mind

Hmm.

I'd say fire 2000 rounds.  It should clear right up.

it is a common problem that the bolt "rides" on the hammer, at least on any AK that ive fired. u can polish it to get rid of it "quick", or shoot a few K rounds to do it "fun".
