I plan on refinishing an ak with alumahyde. Do I need to take the safety lever off or just move it up and down and spray it? How hard is it to remove?

You should disassemble the complete gun down to a barreled receiver. Degrease it and paint.

It's really not that hard to do so.

Dont let it intimidate you...   It will come natural after your first time.  It's easier than taking apart an AR.

Continue repub18 say were working with a  WASR AK how would you further disassemble the rifle, I know about furniture removal all that easy stuff can you really take the barrel on and off that easy? I always thought of that to be a big "No, No" unless it was really needed for repair.

No need to take the barrel off since you will likely want to refinish the barrel as well.  Just completely take everything off the gun.  I.E. Fire control group, furniture, selector, pistol grip, and the gas tube.  You can cover the front site with some foil if you'd like.  After you degrease the gun (let dry or even prior to degreasing bake the gun to get all the oil out of its hiding spots) or sand blast, spray paint all over the rifle (evenly).  You might also want to plug the front muzzle and the chamber.

I have refinished two AK's with this method and both turned out great.  Even using $5 engine paint, you will receive best results using a airbrush compared to a can.

Here is a pic of my AMD I refinished using the method above..  This is from a can of Gunkote from Brownells.

You might want to practice spraying some Duplicolor on some sheet metal before using a $30 can of Gunkote for your first time.

Refinishing is not difficult at all. You do need the right equipment to do a proper job though.  This includes an aircompressor, sandblaster, airbrush, an oven and lots of brake cleaner.

I learned how to refinish an AK from this site....   Refinshing

Also, I would use MolyResin or GunKote as a finish.
