i was looking at some 74's (bulgarian) with the threaded barrel and the 74 brake. the brake seems to fit a tad loose and is held in place by the little push down pin is this normal? i also noticed some of the bulgarians have some sort of curved plate, like a large washer that fits between the handguards and the rear gas block what is the purpose of this |

I got a sar2 ak74 and finally just to the dumb brake off. Looks good but don't work worth a damn. Never could get it to stay tight, and it tended to just throw rounds depending on how the brake was sitting when the gun went off. Without the brake it shoots real well. Kelly |
| from my reading there is a way too tighten up the break so it doesn't wobble.....it invloves taking a bit of the metal from the back of it, so you will be able to screw it all the way up against the FSB......if you press in on the retining pin, you'll find that you can screw the break farther in.......the trick is just to take enough of the metal from the back of the break so it stops screwing in for the retainer pin to engage the slot in the break.......if you remove too much, you are back where you started........a wobble break |
That's how mine is.
It's to reduce wobble and give the gas tube a tighter fit, unnecessary for the most part IMO. Sort of a cheap way to skip quality control on the gas tubes. And about the "rear gas block", that part is actually called the rear sight housing. It does not direct gas in anyway. |
| My Bulgy groups double with a loose brake. Some options include teflon tape (gotta wonder what happens if it gets too hot though), thin crush washers, or just file the back side of the brake a bit so it snugs against the front sight base to secure the pin on the next turn. |
