I pulled out my charging handle today to polish it and I tried to remove the gas piston but I can't seem to get it off. There is a small hole in one side where I can see the threads but it will only unscrew about 1/2 turn then locks. Is there some hidden pin or something I need to remove first or do I just use pliers and try a bit harder?

there is a pin that is peened on both sides.  look closely at the carrier and you can find it.  removal should involve drilling a bit to remove the peen.  you could also remove the peen with a dremel or a file if you wish but it would be more difficult to cover later.

Sounds like part of the pin is gone if there is a hole that allows you to see the piston threads and you shouldn't be able to unscrew it if the pin is thru and secure. Go to RED STAR ARMS website for step by step instructions on how to remove/replace piston/pin. Good luck.

I'm gonna vote you leave the thing on.  Getting that pin out is a bitch.  Maybe a bitch and a quarter.

Leave it in, tape it off so you don't polish it, and polish the carrier as planned, you'll thank yourself later
