Alright, I'm such a noob with AK variants.  I'm searching the site trying to find some info, but I'm not finding what I'm looking for.  Only thing I know about AK's are commies love them and you can do some killer 3round burst headshots in SOF II.  I know my way around AR's.  I believe I want the AK-47 variant, because of the cheaper 7.62, but I may be wrong.

Anyways, my questions are, what are the differences between the different models?  I see sam this, Sks that and this and that.  So confusing.  I see there are different country versions.  What makes them different and how would they be rated on quality?

My budget is $500 for the rifle.  What is a good quality AK for that much or around that price range.  What should I look for?

You could get a SAR-1 7.62 for about 350-400 depending on wher eyou buy, there are some in EE now im sure, and then spend the rest on ammo + mags :D, imho its a great first AK

Well try this:  here

I think it is a good overall view on the Romanian series of Aks.  As far as other variants from other contries?  You'll just have to piece stuff together for yourself.  Im still working on it myself.

Without a doubt I would pick up the AK that Josh Newton (JNEWT) is selling. You couldnt get a better SAR-1. This is the real deal with the true commie receiver unlike the OOW made in the US with the Selector hole drilled too low.

I would JUMP on it if I had any cash

PS, I really like my rifles black.....  Not wood, but if it all comes down to it, wood will do

On the theory that the AK74 and AR15 are the same but different, so for the 47 in 7.62x39. Understand that the round is great to 150yds, but drops hard after that. Romys are good basic AKs for little money (300ish), and group on the fat side of 4" in general. More money, and a Hung/Bulgy/Pole/Russian bbl can get you 3" in general on cheap 7-8 cent ammo. Nothing wrong with a well built kit, and KVAR makes some nice black polymer stocks with heat sheilds that count towards you US parts count in an AK.

Give us a better idea of you goals for function, appearance, optics, and we can keep steering you.

PS- The 7.62x39 AR is only 2moa, with more money and speshul issues, so 3moa in an AK47 is just fine. AK74s get 2moa on 10 cent ammo, mighty close to an AR.

Usually when you spend more money on an AK varient, you are paying for fit and finish - not function.

Romanians are great starter AK's and black synthetic furniture is available from a variety of sources (K-Var seems to be the best IMHO) and you can sell the wood furniture to help offset the cost of the new black polymer.

Jnewts SAR-1 is a very good starter because of all of the extra finish work Josh puts into his pieces.  SAR-1's are not usually that pretty out of the box and Josh has added the slant brake and bayonet lug so the evilness literally drips off of that baby

Read that Romanian AK site...then shop for a WASR-10 with a straight front sight. If you have trigger slap when firing, you can fix or replace the trigger group for under $60 including labor if you get a smith to do it for you.

The rifle comes with wood, but like the other post said, you can replace it with plastic and sell the wood if you want.

The rifle, a bag-full of 30 round mags, and 1000 rounds of Wolf ammo and you're out the door for under $500.

$500 can buy you any number of variants of an AK from a lot of different locations. Ditto on Romanian stuff that has been said, and while I can't say I've handled one of Jnewt's builds, the photos he posts of them are outstanding!!! If you are lucky you may even be able to find a Vector underfolder for about that much. I kicked myself when I turned one down for $475 back in November. It was older, but still looked good. Anyway, I personally own 2 Maadis (Egyptian copy of the Soviet AKM--very close), and have enjoyed working on the one, and will enjoy working on the other. I've seen very nice condition ones selling for about $300 or so; then you add about $100  or so for compliance parts (wood or black polymer stock plus FCG), cut off the welded thread cover, and put whatever evilness you want on it. Then spend the other $75-100 on mags and ammo and you are all set.

Well, what I would use the AK for is just plinking fruits and vegetables.  Mainly, just something different than my AR's. 3-4 MOA is fine with me.  I dont plan on shooting stuff past 100 yards with it.

I dont plan on putting any optics on it.    I plan on using the cheapest ammo for it, so I guess WOLF.

I dont expect precision with the AK.  That's what my AR's are for.  Obviously, I dont want it to look nice, but it will probably be a beater rifle.

That one Newt is selling is very tempting.  I'm going to wait another week or 2 and see what else I can fine.

I'm reading that Romanian site.  I'm still trying to figure out the differences between SAR and WASR and such.

SAR was always a hicap, and has dimples in the rec to hold the mag sides. WASR starts life as locap, has metal insert to hold mag sides, and this are is widened t make it hicap. Mag fits vary a wee bit on WASRs becaue the grinder dude varies. No other difference.
