I'm looking for a reliable decent quality AK for use as a truck rifle.  I don't know much about the AK series of rifles except that  a lot of folks on ARFCOM seem to like / endorse the AK as a low maintenance / reliable all around rifle.

So my question is, what 7.62 version(s) should I look for (ie Russian, Chinese, Yugo, etc.).  Stamped vs. forged, barrel length, stock type, accesories, etc.

For a beater it is hard to beat a $300ish Romanian. Chrome bore, truck use won't hurt their avg finsh anyway, just handpick for straight sights/gas block/siderail parallel to the bore (QC improved a lot in 6 years but some slip thru still).

For a "truck rifle",  +1 for Romanian.

I used the term "truck gun" to describe a general purpose, all aroud "beater" rifle; relatively inexpensive, reasonably accurate (2-3 MOA), not particularly pretty (ie rough finish OK), but reliable even when mildly neglected.

I've seen the term "truck gun" used here and considered the term to fit description above (and to include keeping the rifle in the truck most of the time, subjected to dirt, dust, and moisture on a regular basis).

I don't think I'd describe the purpose of the AK as "security" (at least not for my purposes).

Thanks  for the replies.

Yeah, I would say you get a Romanian. The ones being sold now with muzzle break go for 330. With an american made sidefolder for 360... (aimsurplus.com)

Romanian AK. Probably a WASR-10 is most common and cheap. A post ban can be had under $300 sometimes.

No accessories. Truck gun means it's a tool. AK is a tool.

No competition at all.

I would get a MAK is you can find one for a good price.

I am not a romanian gun fan. All my friends have them and I can't look past the finish's. Not to mention one has a crooked sight and malfunctions a lot.

My MAK was 50$ less than his wsar-10 and has never malfunctioned.

reasonably accurate (2-3 MOA)

More like 4moa for the Romy 47, but very doable from a Romy 74.

Confirm your goals for caliber, price, etc and we can type more if needed.

Thanks again for all the replies.  I have never owned an AK so I don't really know what to expect in terms of sccuracy.  I had thought that 2-3 MOA was a reasonable expectation in terms of accuracy from the 7.62x39.

I don't think that I'd be too happy with 4+ MOA.

What should I be looking for if I want at least 3 MOA accuracy as a minimum?

Are my goals / expectations listed above just unrealistic in a low cost AK?

Thanks in advance

If your looking for accuracy. I would get a SAR-2, this is the 5.45 x39mm version of the SAR-1. I would stay away from the WASR-1.

SAR-1/SAR-2 have the correct magwell dimples the the WASR-1 is missing.

The lack of dimples on the WASR-1 is due to the fact that these were imported in the USA to hold only the single stack 10 round mags. Then some monkey at Century takes a hacksaw to it and raises the price another $100. They weld pieces of steel on the sides of the magwell to act as the dimples which on an original copy are designed to add support to the magazine so it doesnt mag left/right. The problem is that sometimes the magwells are too tight...or too loose.

For the same price of a WASR you can find a new SAR-1/SAR-2 or one in excellent condition. The only bad part is the SAR series of rifles usually do not have threaded barrels or bayonet lugs. But the bayonets are worthless in my opinion anyways. Any gunsmith can thread your barrel for you relatively inexpensive. Or you can probably borrows someones thread kit, it is very easy to do yourself.

I've had 3moa from Hungarian AMD kit builds, seen it from Arsenal SAM7s and VEPRs, but they are not $300 guns either. You can get 2moa from a 7.62x39 AR upper, but it's no beater and the bolt lugs shear on occasion from the opened 5.56 bolt face. SKS fans may chime in later, or ask Mod Shotar.

My Romy SAR2 is steady 2.5moa and stone axe reliable on all mags and ammos tried in 4 years.

That's what I was thinking, keep it in the trunk of the car. When the SHTF one way or another I probably won't be at home.  Instant firepower.
