I understand that the AK47 and AK74 are battle rifles and not match rifles, but how accurate can  they shoot? I am looking at purchasing my first AK, and I want to get the most accurate shooting one that is presently built.  I am planning on using the rifle for hunting and for just plan shooting fun at the range. Thank you for your input.

Given your requirements you want a Valmet, they are the most accurate AK variant I have ever heard of. Generally AK's vary from one to another even within a particular model. I have gotten 3-3.5in from a SAR1 and 2.5-3.5 from a postban Hungarian SA85M. The postban hungarian is the most accurate AK I have the SAR1 is middle of the road. I have a Norinco MAK90 that regularly hits 3.5-4in groups. With my AR's they all shoot about the same for me, 1.5-3 inches depending on how I am shooting, I can shoot from hideous on a bad dayto poorly on my better days.

47s are usually 4moa for me, and 74s are 2-2.5" good groups of 5 at 100, 4x scope, just about any day. I find 5.56 AKs just barely better than 5.45 groups, and my ARs on the Russian 5.56 just barely smaller than the 5.45 groups.
