Forgive me if this is an old topic, I don't mess too much with furrin' guns. I read a lot about "trunk guns" on this site, and was wondering how the Saiga holds up. I realize it's only a 10 round mag, but they seem to be priced reasonably. Aren't these basically politically correct Russian AK's? Thinkin' about buying one just to beat around with, thanks in advance for any input/advice. |

I couldn't resist picking one up. Excellent quality, but in the un-Evil config, too long and the low cap mags are just annoying (Blue Rifle Balls), when it's soooo close to being truly Evil. The conversion is not bad at all and I consider it right up there with my Romanians and Chino RPK. |
To convert it to fire hi-caps, what do you have to do? Do you have to add a bunch of US parts if all you want to do is convert it for hi-caps? |

To take hi-caps, you need to trim the mag catch, and add a bullet guide (feed ramp). Try to install a hi cap and you will see that the rear tang is too thick for the mag catch. You can mark the catch with a mag in, then carefully trim it back until the mag seats. Polish it a little to prevent the catch from digging into mags and getting stuck. If you screw up and take too much off, you can drill out the pin and replace the catch with a new one which should work with no modification. Once the mag is in, notice that hi-caps won't feed due to the missing bullet guide (extra material on the low-cap mags takes care of this). You can buy one from K-var or you can make one from a piece of steel pipe from Home Depot. I did the later. There is a tutorial on it somewhere...they drill a hole into the trunion and put a screw with Loctite. I didn't like the screw idea, so I drilled a larger hole in the bullet guide and welded it to the trunion. As for compliance parts, I'm not sure if a hi-cap conversion alone would require them...I never go "part Evil", all the way or nothing.....I'm sure someone will ping in and clear it up. |
