I like the wood look, but after dumping a few magazines it gets pretty warm.  Any such thing as heat shields for wood?

I am planning to try some ceramic tape. Cost me about $25 for a 50 ft roll.   If it works I will also try it out in my STG58.

Also, you can cut empty beer cans and glue them to inside of handguards.  That is what I'm doing to my G1 FAL with penguin stockset.

I formed some beer can alumnium around the barrel, then trimmed it to match the handguard shape. I then milled out the wood so that there was a 1/8" gap between the wood/alumnium/barrel. I made a couple of stand offs to finish it, and I was pleased with myself. I haven't smoked the wood since, but it does get pretty warm.

I like the handguard to get hot. It lets me know that she's too hot for the gun case (or the truck's carpet).

I wouldn't list this as a must do, or great AK mod, I was just killing time and tinkering. It did help though.
