Quoted: Why would anyone want to cake his rifle in mud anyway? Is that a realistic expectation under any circumstances? This was said after an article was posted about the reliability problems with the AR-15. It is mind boggling that someone would say this about a COMBAT rifle! |
| I'm almost to the point of putting my AR-15 and my friend's SAR-2 in a head to head reliability test just to prove all of those guys wrong, but I know the will say it wasn't done correctly or the AK had some sort of unfair advantage, and I will have destroyed my rifle for no reason. What should I do? |

You should use your rifles as you want to, don't worry about what the other folks say. I think the only reason we would put our guns in the mud would be if we ran into someone who's a better shot than we are. Get it? My AR's have been every bit as reliable as my AK's, and I enjoy each one for the purpose they were designed for. Keep on shootin'. |

Well, I never had a problem with environmental fouling and the M-16 and I had plenty of field time in the Army. Eventually, you are going to drop it in the mud. You are going to slip or something is going to throw mud all over you and the weapon. Actually, the M-16 had to pass tests where it was caked in mud. All US small arms must undergo such acceptance trials at the Aberdeen Proving grounds at one time or another. The funny thing is, H&K did such a test on several modern small arms for their own internal data and the M-16 beat both the G-36 and the HK-93 for reliability. Only the AK and the SIG 550 beat the M-16 for reliability, the M-16 beat everything else. This was told to me by a former H&K employee. H&K really don't like for this story to get around. |

I haven't had any problems with M16's and mud. In my experience just about every M16 reliability issue can be traced to bad mags or operator stupidity (yes, I know the powder problems from Vietnam are well-documented but they have been solved for 30+ years). Good mags and a reasonably intelligent operator ensures a reliable M16. |
Kept it clean and well fed. Took good care of me out in the field. Those M16 bashers needed to let it go 30+ years ago.........that is........ if you had personal expeirences out in the field 38 years ago.
