Shot my first session today with my Norinco 84s. About halfway through the 30 round mag on a rapid fire it cycled twice Put 60 rounds through it and that was the only one. What causes this in AK type weapons?

That happened to my Romanian also.  I found out the problem after doing alot of careful diags. On mine, the hammer slipped past the disconnector and allowed the hammer to follow the bolt home.

Not sure what exactly causes that, but I'd have somebody check or replace that trigger assembly....

Had it happen when a friend was shooting my SAR-2 with the AK74 brake.  Turns out that because there was virtually no recoil, he wasn't really holding it against his shoulder and he was unintentionally bump-firing.

Since it is not a POS Century US fcg with a weak sear connection, I'll guess you just discovered the right hold and motion for bump firing.

With the rifle unloaded and no magazine locked, perform the standard semi-auto function check; Cock the rifle, pull the trigger and hold it down- the hammer should fall. Still holding the trigger down, cock it again. Release the trigger. The hammer must not fall, although a click should be heard. Pull the trigger. The hammer should fall. If your rifle passes this static test, it probably is okay, and you were simply 'bump-firing' like they said (congratulations - your rifle is going to be a LOT of fun). If it doesn't pass the test, by all means do not load it again until it has been examined and repaired by a competent armorer.

Thanks Guys! I will give the test. This is my "fun gun" so I think I will try to perfect the bump firing method. Never tried it with my AR, it is my varmint rig and gets treated a little better. I was impresssed with the open sight accuracy of the AK. was busting rocks in the pasture out to 200 yards easy.

What exactly is bump fireing?   Is it, intentionally trying to find the sweet spot where the hammer catch and disconnector kinda slip?

Hold it loosely with your right hand, tug it gently fwd with your left, let the recoil work the trigger 'sweet spot'.
