| put a wood buttstock on an AK with a synthetic pistol grip and synthetic handguards? |

its your rifle, do what ever turns yer crank. probably not "technically" correct, but if you look at alot of battle used rifles they are a mix of whatever parts they had laying around. IIRC back in chechnya (sp?) i remember seeing 74's with wood butts and plum forearms. who really cares if its just a shooter anyway. |

Well - yes and no. The Valmet is technically a modified AK. The function, bolt and carrier, trigger group, gas system, magazine locking, etc are the same. The Valmet differs in its contours of the receivers (they made both stamped and milled), trunion designs, gastube attachment (no swing-up lock like others - its a very finely machined slot-and-rail system that slides through the handguard) and sighting system. I personally have a M71/S in .223, and it is nicer than anything I have handled AK-wise except for a Galil - and the first Galils were built on receivers purchased from Valmet! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v305/lancew/ValmetTrunion.jpg |

I've actually seen pictures from Russia where they had a couple of 74's with plum handguards and pistol grips and wood buttstocks, so anything is possible. Most armorers would just install the parts that needed repair, without necessarily looking for what's correct..... As I remember, these pics were from the mid 90's and those weren't good years in Russia, so money/parts availablity may have been an issue. |
Sigurd, you have excellent taste in weapons! Man I want a Valmet! |
