| What is the difference between the ported and unported gas tubes? Could you replace a unported tube with a ported one? |

The gas blocks on AKMs, like the Steyr Maadi are ported (where the gas tube and gas block overlap), therefore you don't need a ported gas tube. If you have a preban Chinese AK-47 rifle for instance, look at the gas tube and it should be ported with 8 holes and the gas block is not ported. This is done to bleed off some of the gases. I wouldn't change from the original setup. Adding a ported gas tube to a ported gas block could result in not enough gas blowback - it's the gas that operates the action of the AK. DennyB |

On my Vepr K (made by Molot, Russia) the gas block was not vented and neither was the gas tube. I installed a Bulgarian vented gas tube and noted that it vented out a LOT of the crud rather than shoot it back at my face. On my Vepr, the gas tube isn't "sealed" as it passes over the rear trunion. In fact, there are holes there that would allow all of the crap to fly into my face and it does... I taste gunpowder on everything. With the vented gas tube, I noted a much larger flash signature (16.5" 7.62x39 barrel, no muzzle device) in broad daylight using Wolf ammo. I also noted a slight improvement in groupings but no one else could confirm this. To answer your question: I've seen rifles that had both vented gas blocks AND vented gas tubes, so it should not affect functionality one single bit. The major benefit to using a vented gas tube is that it vents the majority of gas/carbon/powder residue into the air rather than back into the receiver. |
