Can I take a Bulgarian barrel and install it in an SAR-2 trunion? or is it more feasible to install the whole front end(trunion, barrel and all)? I have a project in mind and want to know the best direction for this .........

Yo Cyclone,

The Romanian trunnion is sized for a 23MM barrel, the Bulgarian is 22mm.

If you drop in the entire front end it works fine.  The rivet holes line up perfectly.

I JUST completed this on my SAR-2 . . . . along with a triangle folder.

The $99 deal at K-Var is worth every penny.  The Bulgarian front end seems substantially more accurate than the stock barrel.

Thanks for the reply..............I want to do this, and add the AR-M1 flash hider plus the triangle folder............I will do that........I didnt know if there were any legal issues connected to the trunion

The serial number is on the trunnion, but I'm going to bend a flat to build back onto the old trunnion.  The serial number will still be on the rifle that I create from the removed barrel/trunnion so I'm pretty sure the ATF will still be happy.

Is there anyone at the ATF that can tell an original Romanian receiver from a well crafted Tapco flat?  I doubt it . . .

So, if I had a Bulgarian front end installed on my SAR-2 its all kosher? I had heard that it was a no-go thing............If thats the case then its a good thing, cause I ordered one from K-Var  and if I dont use the old trunion, then its ok?

I believe that this is a grey area.  The receiver IS the weapon according to the ATF, but on the Romanians the serial number is on the trunnion.  There is no serial number on my SAR-2 receiver.  Therefore when I reassemble my SAR-2 front end back onto a really nice Tapco flat with all the correct markings it will be INDISTIGUISHABLE from the original.

So, technically I may be breaking a law but there is not really any reasonable way that it could be enforced.  The receiver itself is not serial numbered . . . . therefore the JBT's really don't have a way to track it.

Of course, YMMV IMNSHO CYA

PS>>> K-Var sells the front ends SPECIFICALLY for installation onto Romanian rifles.  I qoute:

Bulgarian AK-74 Part Set Offer

There have been numerous inquiries and requests from our customers that have been e-mailed and phoned in regarding using the AK-74 Part Sets on their Romanian rifles. By using the receiver from their existing rifle and using our AK-74 barrel assembly and bolt carrier and bolt head assembly, the Romanian rifle will not only look like the original Russian AK-74 rifle but will have superior performance than the Romanian (wannabe) AK-74 due to better barrel and parts.

The main concern that our customers had was when buying the complete AK-74 Part Sets they were buying many components that they could not use. They have asked us if we can offer only the parts necessary for the physical conversion. In response to your inquiry this is what we are going to offer you.

Bulgarian AK-74 (5.49x39.5 cal) complete Barrel Assy. Includes: Cleaning rod, AK-74 compensator, front sight block assy, trunnion block, bolt carrier assy, bolt head assy, top cover, and recoil assy. All parts are brand new from de-milled rifles with matching serial numbers.

For an incredible price of
BA-74B .............. $99.99 ........ After Forum Member Discount ........ $92.99

if your going to go threw all the hastle of installing the whole frontend
you may as well just buy a new reciever and build a whole gun

Naw, it's boneheadedly simple to drop the new front end into a SAR receiver.  Six rivets and you're done.  I literally got my front end done in less than an hour.

But, I would build a new reciever for the OLD front end.

The Bulgarian front end is worthy of the REAL Eastern block receiver.  The Romanain front end is the weak link IMNSHO.  The barrel is too thin and the fit is spotty.

I think I have decided to just scrap the whole idea..............too much trouble for me at the moment..........I will just wait on K-Var to get the fsb and then create a Campyclone

Buy a darn Bulgarian kit and USA receiver. Save the SAR-2 for a Romy FSB when and if they come along again at K-VAR. Go Romanian spec with the wire folding stock and funky wood handguards while you're at it, or just keep a bastard SAR-2 with a black polymer stock set like I have.
