Im new at this AK-47 thing. I have bought two in the last 2 months. (Im an HK Freak). One is a Romanian wasr-10 and the other a Bulgarian. I want to change the Romanian to a better looking folding stock (It currently has wire folder). My question is whats the difference between a milled and a stamped receiver? How can I tell the two apart?

first, just going by weight, a milled ak47 rifle weighs a very noticeable 2 lbs. more than a stamped akm type rifle.

the milled reciever has, of course, no rivet heads protruding from the sidewalls. the akm will have 6 rivet heads per side (3 front trunnion, 2 rear trunnion, 1 anti-crush brace tube) showing.

the stamped akm will have a 'dimple' stamped over the magazine well (approximately 5/16" x 3/4") OR it will be like your wasr and the russian saiga rifles and have a smpth, flat area on the sidewall over top of the magazine well opening.

the milled ak47 will have a much larger lightening cut milled into the sidewalls just above and in front of the magazine well opening.

This is an excellent illustration of the different receiver types.
