I am hoping to purchase an ak soon.  I was planning on getting a SAR-1 but it seems they are no more.  So now I am not sure of what other ak offerings there are out there.   How good are the WASR hi-caps,  do the magazines fit well?  What are some other good aks for under $500?

Check out the EE, SAR1's pop up every once and a while, or you could go to Florida Gun Works and they have them for about $470!

WASRS are good but dont pay over 400 for one. Also try to see it before you buy and look for sight cant and other problems.

Get a SAR1 dated 2003....the date is on the side of the receiver or trunion.  can't remember right exact location right now and the gun is locked up.  All of the 2003's i've seen have been fine.  A few of the older ones I've looked at had canted sights and some serious trigger slap.

WASR mag fits depend on how the grinder was applied, as they are locaps from the factory. I'll pay $50 more for handpick peace of mind.

How hard is your budget? There are soem very tasty options after $500, SAM7S, VEPR, Atlantic Polish underfolder just to name 3.

Which is a better gun,  the ohio ordnance ak or the  global/arsenal ak?  I think these are probably the best choices, but if there is a better one, do tell me.  I like the idea of the ohio's five year warranty.

If I were you, I would save up $1000 and invest in quality. I know this from experience, since I ended up putting a lot of money into a Romanian SAR-2 (5.45x39) to make it nice. Now, I wouldn't trade it for anything, but in retrospect, I tried to get away with going cheap, and Century Arms's monkeys didn't make it easy for me with a crooked gas block, crooked front sight assembly, broken handguard retainer, out of spec scope rail and a horrible trigger slapping trigger. Did I mention that the finish was literally scratched to the bare metal on the receiver among other places? Century wouldn't touch it, since the gun functioned fine, so I was out of luck.

AK-USA fixed up my gun (and they did a A+++++++ job), but in retrospect, I would have been better off buying a Bulgarian kit and building it on an American receiver OR buying a Saiga conversion (AK-103/101 or whatever).

Hence, I'd highly recommend you look at something else. Another option is to purchase a Saiga rifle and save up cash for a conversion into an AK-103 later on (if you want 7.62x39). Personally, I'd save up the money and pay for nice AK rather than play with one cheap early on.

It's such a shame we're getting crap Romanian rifles, because the Romanians build damn fine rifles. I've seen pics of military AKs in use by Romanian forces, and they don't have the defects we see on SARs, WASRs, etc.
