I have a rifle that has a mark where some plastic melted when it touched the barrel. Can anyone recommend a way to get the plastic residue off without damaging the finish.

fingernail and stoddard solvent.
you might try acetone, but be advised that acetone will cause corrossion if left on the steel.

Just heat the barrel up so it burns off. About 5 mags. should do it.

I had one of the early Choate stock sets. I melted the hand guard. A few mags later the problem solved itself.
Remember, it is an AK, not some wussiefied hi-faluten AR.

What finish are you worried about not damaging?
Prob heat up by a few mags, then rub off with a piece of wood.
