| I am in the middle of my first ak build, I am ready to paint tommorow. The ? I have is this, the kit has the serial NO# **486 and the bolt and carrier are marked **489 its a polish pkmks kit. What are the odds of getting mixed parts with interchangable numbers on them, I am wondering if I need to buy a headspace gauge or am I good to go, It seems to chamber rounds with no play in the bolt when it locks up. What am I looking for as far as headpspace problems go, I am thinking of just doing what some other home built testers do and duct tape it to the table and pull the trigger with a long string. That is as soon as I can get a semi fcg ordered. But any observations on what I need to watch out for would be helpful. |
Just because the gun doesn't GRENADE on the first shot doesn't mean it is headspaced correctly. Find some gauges ESPECIALLY if your bolt and trunnion #'s don't match. Two out of the three AMD kits we built WITH matching numbers failed the test and had to be re-headspaced. |

You not quite alone.... I'm building my first AK type rifle also. I'm doing a Bulgarian AK74 parts kit from K-Var on a Cold Steel Solutions 80% receiver. I would have to say that I would want to check my headspace to make shure it is safe. It may have already been done at the factory when they built these rifles originally but who knows

I got my .223 headspaces guages from Forster I did't see 7.62x39 or 5.45x39 on their site but maybe you can email them and see if they are available |

Got mine from Brownells: 513-100-490 7.62X39 MANSON GO HEADSPACE GAUGE 1 26.00 513-100-491 7.62X39 MANSON NO GO HEADSPACE GAUGE 1 26.00 They also have Clymer guages: Cheap shipping on small orders, only $3.50 to my area They recommend that you use the same manufacture for the go and no-go, don't mix between brands. |
