Have you built any AK kits on Global Trades new 1.6 mm receiver? If so, were there any problems with assembly? I'm trying to decide on which receiver to get for my PMKMS parts kit. Thanks! |

I have and didn't really like them. A good bit of modification to the trunions and selector switch. I the one did had to be rivet twice before I was satified with it. The receiver was so thick, the rivets wouldn't dimple it into the trunions. This resulted in the front trunion actually moving up and down with a little effort. I had to remove the first set, countersink the holes and rerivet before it was acceptable. Mike |
| When I first heard about the new, thicker receivers I thought it sounded like a good ideal. But is there anything wrong with the standard thickness Commie receiver? I know some of those AKM you see on the news in Afganastan have got to be real old, but they look like they still put lead downrange. |

But is there anything wrong with the standard thickness Commie receiver? no. but...the commie receivers are MUCH harder than the hexxe and oow receivers. i've rockwell tested them all. oow is dead soft (hardened only at the pivot holes and ejector tip). a bulgarian ak74 receiver goes @9+ rockwell "c" scale. i can't even get an honest read on our rockwell tester, the oow is so soft. that said, even the oow and hexxe receivers will suffer one hellova lot of abuse if properly assembled. |

i don't think 'anybody' does any additional heat treatment operations to the itm/oow recs unless it is special order per customer request. i know i, personally, do nothing extra to them. i think ak-usa charges something like $30 to heat treat the entire receiver. if i were building that 'special' ak that was meant to be the best of the best and have all the bells and whistles...i would take the time to have the rec heat treated. we have to look at the issue from a real world standpoint though. so far, other than a few faulty ejectors getting welded into receivers marked with the incorrect calibre and the well known dimensional errors, there have been only two known instances (that i am aware of) of oow recs failing prematurely. one was most likely a mistake on the builders parts. NEITHER were related to a heat treat issue. i can show you a pmds with over 15k rounds of hammertime fun on it and there is NO noticeable or appreciable wear on the oow rec. |
