i have seen several of the posts where some of you have done custom paint jobs on your AKs (camo, desert) etc... i have several questions about this. first when you sprayed it did you tape sertain things of and if so what. second how did you keep from covering to serial # assuming you applied several coats, without leaving a spot where tape may or may not show. and also has any body ever re sprayed the existing bluing with a black and had it come out looking "nice". I have a WASR 10 that the wood is very nice but the bluing isnt so thank you very much to those who decide to answer my extremly long post |

they key to a successful spray job is surface preparation. clean, degrease, clean and degrease again. using any of the modern baked on laquers (molykote, guncoat, etc.) from brownells and lauer custom and other suppliers can bring outstanding results. multi-color camo jobs can be done in a variety of fashions. if you google around you will find tons of pictorial 'how to' articles that demonstrate the techniques, pastterns and review the products used. the paint job may be on a hunting bow, atv, boat or binoculars, but can be applied to doing up your rifle. |
That is the main thing. Also take your time, the easiest way to screw up a job is to get in a hurry. As for covering numbers and masking, products like DuraCote are applied in very thin coats, and will not fill in the serial numbers. I did an old browning in .270 for a fellow who had let it rust and ruined the blueing. Once the rust and corrosion was removed, I used a semi gloss black DuraCote over the metal (including existing blueing) and the results were excellent, and there was no difference in color between the blueing and bare metal. |
