OK guys, help me out here. How come milled receiver AK's don't need front and rear trunions, but stamped AKM's do? Thanks.

the milled receiver is machined from a forged block of steel.

all unnecessary weight is milled away in the manufacturing process, but all the steel that is necessary to support the bbl./front end and the buttstock is NOT machined away.

you could say that the trunnions, as such, are integral to the milled receiver, although the egg really did come after the chicken in this case.

when the stamped akm was designed, one could visualise its' construction in this fashion: the partial front and partial rear sections of a milled receiver are connected by a sheet steel (stamped) structure. thus, the trunnions are merely redesigned remnants of what is actually required from the milled receiver. like many other firearms, the kalashnikov 'could' be made from polymer, aluminum or some other material with a little redesigning.

Which is why the milled has one less part in the eyes of the ATF for the compliance count (front trunion).
