OK, guys, I know this is a newbie question, but I would like to know.  Is there any way to avoid the scratch marks that occur when moving the safety up and down on an AK or when moving  the handguard release lever?  I am used to owning  handguns where scratches are considered a problem.  Can these scratches be avoided?

You're kidding, right! .......................................Yeah,you can pull the selector away from the receiver enough to clear it before changing settings but short of cold blueing it everytime you remove the handguards, not much can be done about the hg lever.

you can put a piece of hrat shrink tubing over the selector lever, but it will need replaced at frequent intervals.

a turn or two of tape will also help prevent the scrstch and quiet the noise made by actuating the safety/selector.

me? i just take this as part of the kalashnikov experience.

You can fight rust and keep it all black by rubbing the area in used motor oil. The scratch is just part of the gun as far as I know.
