A question for all the board AK guru’s. I’m looking at a MAK 90 that “needs” a muzzle brake. O.K., the owner wants one. The barrel nub measure’s a bit over .551” in dia.. it appears to have rough tool turn marks on it and it appears to be painted over. I believe that it is sized and ready to be cut to the standard 14mm x 1 L.H. thread. I had also believed that these were either capped, or turned down threads. Does anyone know if Norinco had also just roughed turned some of these to size? If I could get the right die, this could be sweet. |
| Rain, some MAK 90s had the existing threads turned off leaving an undersized muzzle but most of the ones I've seen lately were the correct size for threading. You will need a 14-1 LH die and bore alignment tool,Brownell's has both and they will probably run you around 55.00. |

Johno, seems like you are the one answering my questions lately, thank you. I thought that I had a sitebookmarked for taps and dies, but I can't find it. Brownells is currently out of stock for the 14mm dies. But you answered my question, and I appreciate it. This one may be easy. |
| what I did with mine was I bought the US slant from brownells then got a drill bit 1 1000th smaller than ther OD of the muzzle drilled the threads out of the slant, heated the slant, cooled the muzzle tapped it on and tacked welded it with my mig on the Front sight base was done in about 30 minutes. |

If the threads were turned off the barrel would measure around .500" +/- .010. www.dynasystems-ltd.com/GunFile/TAT.html Has threading kits with all the tools needed to thread a barrel. There is also a link to threading instructions below the kit info. The first MAK-90 rifles imported were pre ban rifles that were modified to meet the post ban specs they had the barrel threads covered by a muzzle nut or smooth cap and most had a single tack weld. Later imported rifles had the threads turned off and the last rifles imported before the ban in 1994 the barrels were not threaded from the factory. |
