This may be a stupid qustion and may be one that is already posted somewhere, but what is the difference between the ak47 and ak74.  From what I understand its one is 7.62 and the other is 223. Please correct me if Im wrong. Thanks

ps, what should be price differnce like. Is there a reliability issue with one over the other.

No, the 47 is 7.62 and the ak74 is 5.45. From what I have seen there is a couple cent per round differance in ammo. And relibiliy should not be an issue.

Reliability is the same..Price's tend too be a little more for a 74..The 5.45x39 the AK-74 shoot's is semiliar to the 223.....a very accurate round...There is no stupid question's when it comes to the quest for knowledge....

They do make AKs in 5.56/223, all smallbore AKs are called 74 models by default, 5.45 is the original Russian caliber. Mainly due to the straightness of the round vs the taper of the Russian rounds, the 5.56 sometimes has mag/feeding issues.
You can run more variety of bullets in 5.56, and some have gotten down to 1.5moa on Black Hills. But most prefer 1" larger groups on 10 cent ammo.
Have some of each, prefer 5.45.
