Are there any pre-ban romanian AK-47's.  If so how whould I go about finding out if one is pre-ban.

A guy I work with has a romanian AK and is selling it.  He says that he was told it was pre-ban when he bought it.  But he says he is not sure.  He wants $650 for it (my price, he listed it for 800), this also comes with 2 sets of stocks, a removeable scope mount and some kind of scope (I am not sure if it is a red dot sight or a regular scope)  (2) 5rd mags (2) 10rd mags (9) 30rd mags (1) 75rd drum.  It also comes with some other kind of rif-raf.  O I almost forgot 100rds of steel core ammo.  I have shot this AK before in the past it was a lot of fun, also I was with him when he bought the steel core ammo.  He is selling it because he has 2 of them and he wants to get something else.  Is this a rip or should I jump on it.  If it is a pre-ban it is mine.  If it is not a pre-ban what should I look for to make sure it does not violate any laws (it does not have the thumb hole stock).  I am not totaly up on the whole pre-ban post-ban thing I have just stuck to handguns.  I do not think he would lie to me but I want to make sure I am not buying something that might put me where I work, but I would not be able to go home (jail).

Any advice plz.

Thanks.

Edit:  Ok just found out that there is not romanian AK-47 that are pre-ban.  Can they have the pistol grips with out the thumb hole stock?

As long as this rifle has at least 5 US made parts[ie trigger, diconnecter, hammer, pistol grip and gaspiston] it's legal to have it with a pistol grip. Is it a SAR? or a WASR-10?
If it's a SAR then the price should go:
$325 or so for rifle
$75 for drum
$9 each for 30's
$80 for stock set depends on what kind it is.
$50 or so for scope maybe more maybe less.
$25 for ammo.
Total of $636
You could have one the same way unfired for $636 0r so.
So it's not a real good deal IMO.
If you could get it for $600-$625 that would be an ok deal.
And no there is no such thing as a pre-ban romy ak.
Thats my 2cents

I am not aware of Pre-Ban romanians in this country.  Note that this would be pre-89 for imported rifles. Fortunately the Romanians put the year of manufacture in the serial#  such as 2001-XXXX.  The SAR-1 series as imported and retrofitted by Century are legal with pistol Grip and standard stocks.  they have no bayo lug and the barrel's are not threaded for a brake.  The AKs never did a flash hider.  In general there is no advantage to a pre-ban AK except perhaps a folding stock all of which I have seen for AKs particularly the romanian wire stock, suck as a shooter.  The plastic side folders are not bad but I don't think Romania did those.  Price of an SAR-1 is around $350ish for rifle NIB, with one 10rd and one 30rd mag plus cleaning kit and sling.  AK ammo from either wolf or barnaul ( the best ) is about $70/1000 or $40 per 500.

I think it may be a deal at around the $500 mark.  Anything more I think I would pass.

A few pre-89 Romanians exist, but this guy sure as hell does not have one of them. $2000+ is what it would have cost him.

Romanian AK rifles were not imported till 1997 so there is no such thing as a pre ban Romanian AK rifle. The first 7.62x39mm Romanian rifles imported were the model WUM-1 imported by Interordance of America. The first ones imported had the half circle cut out on the rear of the receiver. Later imported ones had square cut receivers.
