hello all
I'm considering an ak purchase and tried to use the search, because of the site's "newness" that is not working right now....so forgive me if this has been beating to death. I was thinking of the "lower cost" wasr-10 low cap mag version for $179.95  from classic arms...don't really care for the stock...then thought well get the high cap version for $275.00. Well then saw something somewhere about the Saiga. If I understand correctly..the Saiga could be a better rifle. more accurate, etc. this could also be converted to high cap mags or maybe buy some 30 rounder that have a block in them to only go 10 rounds somewhere out of the USA and remove something from the mags and no dremel work on the rifle...I'm so confused.. the only place I have found to get a Saiga is cdnn, if they have them in stock???. same price as wasr 10.
Help me sort this out, what are the pros and cons of the above. the Saiga also comes in 3 cal. too...I have an SKS and recently purchased a Bushy ar 15, so deciding which cal. for the Ak is a toss up also, not interested in the 308 version. I wish I was able financelly to get them both in high cap version but at this time I am not so my thinking is to go "cheap" now and possible do the converstion later when my "money tree" grows some:)
thanks for your time and help and sorry this is so long.

Here is my advice from someone who has 4 kids and is often hounded by pesky budget issues.  Yes, the Saiga can be converted, but it is a professionals job or a very tallented amature.  Same for the low cap Romanian, although considerably less of a job and the parts change out needed to make this legal could be done at home.  Now, the normal capacity for about $100 more is about what you'd pay for the low cap + conversion parts.  None of the above will shoot straiter than any of the others listed.  They will all shoot about the same.  My adivce is that if you can financially swing the high cap version, get it.  You can always swap parts count and stocks later to be 922R compliant.  If money is the key issue at the moment, get the low cap.  Same difference and any competent smith can upgrade it later.  It will be a fun plinker and 7.62x39 is the cheapest most economical centerfire cartridge on earth.  Either way, you won't lose and will have alot of fun.  Welcome to the darkside.

Depends on your workmanship skills also. With a SKS already, a lo-cap AK makes little sense to me (but it's your hobby and not my choice). A $350 hicap Romy AK will often need help for the Century trigger set. If polymer furniture with heat shelds up front turns you on, get the lo-cap WASR, chuck the stock for US bits from KVAR ($95) and your new US FCG for a total of 6 US parts (plenty). If you like a longer handguard so you do not burn yourself by moving the left hand 1" in the wrong direction, the Saiga may be your choice. Real Russian, good quality, but the front handguard lacks insulation/cooling (vent holes and foil improv only) and the gas block needs removal to add the std mil stock handguard retaining ring.

DON"T get a Low Cap - you will regret it later!

The WASR Hi cap is a solid buy at under $300
You can pretty it up later  ( wood and metal replace/refinish)
You can also put in a better trigger , (RedstarArms.com)

7.62x39 ammo is cheap now, so are mags.

Aim and Classic get the same stuff. I knwo Aim catches some fo the crap, and is often graceful about the ones that slip thru to you. Not enough reports on Classic to have an opinion. But Romy QC is much better than it was when first came here 5 years ago....

Any access to the occasional Indy 1500 shows? Ask the hometown forum for any typical good vendor deals there. No substitute for hand pick on a Romy, even with improved QC.

Had to replace the stutter fire fcg on my 2000 SAR1. Otherwise fine and smoked the handguards a few times yet still get 4moa.
