Will a Romanian Side Folding Stock fit my SAR-1 without any receiver modification?

Seems like the've been hard to find lately. If anyone is looking for one.., try ebay @ 34.95 a copy!!

Ok, lets keep the ball rolling.  The folder that I want for my SAR-2 (for after the ban of course) is available from KVAR for $100.  Its from a Bulgarian parts kit, which I think has a basically idential receiver to the Romanians, but I'm not sure.

Can I get this one to work?

Duke,that one requires extensive modifications.

As far as I can tell, it looks like drilling holes in the side of the reciver and installing rivets to hold the block in place.  That's not a problem.  My problem is whether the rear tang on the Romanian receiver would get in the way and have to be removed-- at that stage we are talking about a very ugly solution indeed.

Can you elaborate for me?

Yep..., that's the one I will have on my post sunset Krink!!

But the Romanian folder will fit the bill nicely for my garden variety SAR-1!!

By the way...., does the Romanian folder fold left, or right??

Thanks,  RU4FREEDOM -- out

The Romanian sidefolder folds to the right side, it sits about 1" below the charging handle.

Yeah, your entire rear 'tang' (rear trunion) would need to be removed and replaced with the trunion in the pic for that Bulgie side-folder to fit.  That would involve grinding, riveting, etc...not for the faint of heart.

take care,

Ugh... I know its only a $300 gun, but I don't want to modify it that much.  I've already refinished mine, and it reminds me of all those sporterized 1903s and Mausers that they did in the 50s and 60s because hey, they were only $30 guns so who cares right?  I think I'll leave the tang alone and just go with the Romanian type.  Too bad they are so ugly.

Duke, yeah they may be a little ugly but extremely functional and also Militarily correct for your Romanian AK.Combine the folder with one of the Romy laminated forward facing pistol grip lower handguards and its a comfortable arrangement.

The AKS type stock also requires removing about 5 degree angle and setting a radius on the left side of the receiver....definatley not a dremel operation.

There were piles of Romy folders for sale at the Knob Creek shoot over the weekend; at least three different vendors had them. Picked mine up for $35 even; prices ranged from $34-55.

Waiting patiently for September to come along! :-)
