Are the amd-63 kits from centerfire systems a good kit and rifle for plinking? I have an ar-15 and i want a cheap ak type weapon. Please leave opinions and pics of your amd-63. Thanks. |

I recently took my newest AK, an AMD 63 kit built on an OOW receiver, to the range for it's first shooting. Shot a few big dirt clumps to confirm basic sighting, set up an 8" bull 50yds out, fired 5. 5/5 in 2 1/4", and 4/5 in 1 1/2" AND in the 10 ring. No-touch irons and good groups = nice parts. Parts looked as new as they do in their ad. |
That's what I'm building right now. I used a Romanian upper and lower handguard set. I had to modify the lower slightly because of the Hungarian handguard retainer being different than a 'regular' one. I also had to shorten the end of the gas tube just enough to get it to fit(approx .030"). I also bought a plum polymer Hungarian stock set from K-VAR that fits perfectly. With the muzzlebrake, it looks just like an AK-74! Should be done next week. |

i don't like the forward vertical grips. frankly, i can't hit shit when i shoot the 63 and 65 rifles. i find the forward grip one of the most un-natural holds i ever tried. it might be great for burst firing from the hip, but i can't shoot for crap with it in offhand. shooting prone with the vertical forward grip is weird for me, also. resting on a bench? fuggeddaboudit. ymmv. |

Is there much of a difference between the amd65 and the amd63? I so which one is better? All I noticed was the stock and the barrel lengh. That's it. A local chronied his AMD 65 and found only about 150fps lost to the bbl length. I went 63 since I prefer bbl to big muzzle thing for 16" min. |

I think the forward lower grip looks really cool and makes the AK look very unique but I tried the Romanian forward lower pistol grip and didnt like it, it looked good but it felt awkward during actual use, because of the angle you bend your wrist, the standard AKM handguard feels much better and more natural for me. |
| I agree about the foward grips being a little uncomfortable to hold but IMO, the AMD-65 is nothing more than a sub-machine gun chambered in 7.62X39. Obviously it's not meant for single shot target shooting but spraying in full auto and that's where the foward grip comes in handy. |

I got some of the AMD kits and will be converting one to AKM HGs. I have some gas tubes with HG on the way for $12.00 ea. and lower HG are $12.00 new. ORF has romanian take off stocks for sale. These are nice kits and well worth the extra $25.00 to convert to std handguard configuration. Keep the original pieces if you ever want to change back. |

My second AMD is being built by InRange at this time. It's a 65, but I opted for the fixed Krinkov Buttstock manufactured by FSE. When the AWB sunsets, I will probably play with a romanian slip in sidefolder to see how I like it. I don't think the single wire buttstock would be very comfortable on your cheek. KF |
