as far as accuracy and long range, which is a better gun the SAR3 or the Mini-14?

It's a toss-up... The factory Mini-14 barrels are nothing to brag about, but other Match/Varmit grade barrels (which aren't too expensive) are quite accurate.

I know a guy that has a Ranch version Mini-14. He has some barrel on it which allows him to shoot almost MOA.

That said, out of the box, they'll probably preform ths same. Spend an extra $120 on the Mini-14 and it'll be a pretty accurate weapon. But, don't bother accurizing the entire rifle... it's not worth it. If you want to accurize a rifle, get a Bushmaster/Colt/other AR-15 model.

Out of the box, SAR3, if you were gonna take the time and expense to accurize the mini, you would be better off  getting a used AR.

do not discount the saiga and vepr .223 variants.

I have to go with the SAR 3. My Mini14 could barely hit a coke can at 100 with a scope.

The SAR 3. I had a freind that had a preban mini 14 that did real well. But the rest I have seen have had problems. Like the accuracy is poor when the barrel gets hot. I had a friend joke, that his might make a good mail box post :)

I happen to like the mini 14 a bit better than a SAR 3 for the most part. I think in the accurate dept it's close, . The Mini 14 certainly carry's better.Like walking and hikeing . It's a matter of likes. Either is still nice anough ,WarDawg

Nobody's mentioned mentioned the cost of reliable highcap mags for the mini-14 vs. the SAR3.  Last show I went to they were about 3X as much or more for Ruger high caps - which IMO and experience are the only ones that you can reliably count on.

Accuracy is about the same out of the box for either and the SAR3 will Never care what you feed it, the mini may.

Ditto. The vepr is a bit heavier but in my experience a little more accurate.

Yep, Saiga 223, converted for pistol grip and normal mags.  Very cost effective, mags are still cheap, and use Wolf all you want.  More accurate than either probably.
