I have recently bought a new WASR-10 High cap and was planning on refinishing the gun.  I was checking out the KG gun-kote and I noticed in tie directions it says this:

You can apply Gun Kote over phosphate (Parkerizing) finishes without blasting.

Now I'm totally prepared to bead or sand blast the gun, but I was thinkin the finish on those WASRs looks alot like park to me, so would it work to just degrease and then apply and bake the gun-kote on there without the need of abrasive blasting the metal?

Just curious, thanks :).

the wasr is black oxide finished.

you can apply g-kote over black oxide. the only requirement is that the surface be clean and de-greased.

i advise baking the grease/assembly oils out of your stripped parts prior to g-koting.

matter of fact, i suggest that you bake the parts TWICE to cook out all the oil/grease trapped in the cracks ans pores of the steel.

acetone wipe all surfacesprior to spraying the coating on.

Thanks Campy ...
I plan to bake the hell out of it, and then hit it with some acetone, and then bake it some more.  It's a relief to know that I don't have to sand blase the gun.  It's just less money I have to spend in the refinishing process.

I'm hoping it turns out good, I have have heard alot of good things about gun-kote.

Does anyone have any pictures of a gun-kote job they did on their ak where they did'nt sand blast?

When in doubt, bake it one more time.  It will make a mess of your efforts if you don't get all the grease.

Does anyone happen to know if the SAR-1 is black ox coated as well?

Yes, the finish on the SAR-1 as with all SAR's as imported is a form of black oxide bluing applied to a bead-blasted surface to give a matte appearance.
