How do I seperate my upper handguard from the gas tube?

I ordered an Ironwood stock set and need to know how to remove the upper HG. It wont budge.

I just take a pair of pliars and hold the end of the gas tube with them and then just twist the handguard off. You might have to go back and forth a little bit before it loosens, but it should come off.

I would use a wrench on the part of the tube that locks into the reciever, instead of pliers, personally...

You can use a bench vise to hold the flats in the rear part of the gas tube. Twist the top off being very careful not to have your hand or fingers near the corners of the tube. It will cut your hand and leave nasty scars.

So will this destroy the old hand guard?

I always lock the rear end of the gas tube in a vise, and then push down on the wood while rotating it.  It will come off eventually....sometimes the wood will split on you so be careful.

That worked like a charm. Thanks.

I never would have thought to do it that way.
