I was looking at the picture of the AK-74 (around page 5 or 6 of the SEAK thread pinned at the top) and noticed there was a thin tube or wire of some sort below the barrel.  I looked at another AK-74 (at atlanticfirearms.com) for comparison, and it did not have this wire/tube/whatever.

What is it?  Is it critical to function?  If so, it sure looks like it could get easily bent.

The attached cleaning rod is a very good idea, IMO...If you get an ubsrtuction in the bbl. you have the means to clear it in the field...
