| Ok, it seems to me that determining wether a Ak is pre or post is pretty shady to me, its not like an ar or what not that you could find a # list really fast. So what is a easy way for a new guy to determine if the Ak was imported before the ban took afect? I've never seen a serial # list for anything remotly like that so how do all you guys know if the rifle is a preban or not other then takeing the guy your buying it off of word? |

If it sez MAK-90 (91,etc) its postban. period There are no clean cut off figures like ARs. I can't remember the markings on the undefolders(somebody help my feeble mind here) It was something like S56-1S anyway it has an extra S in it. These are common finds at gunshows being passed off as prebans. Another easy way is to look for the bayo lug. Most fakers are too lazy to replace the gas port. No bayo lug, no preban! There...clear as mud? |

there are very complete seial number/model number/importer lists compiled for the galil. there is a partial valmet serial number list. all kassnar import hungarian sa-85's are pre-ban. all kbi imports are not. all steyr maadi's are pre-ban. all intrac, paars and cai imports are not. all romanian's are post-ban. all bulgarians are post-ban. b-west can be either pre or post-ban. all mak-90's are post-ban. not all 56s's are pre-ban. with chinese rifles, an expirienced eye is sometimes the only way to tell. even then, there are those examples that cannot be catagorized. |

OK...after an eternity of searching I found what can only be described as...the missing link hehehehehe..get it joke...oh, never mind. mywebpages.comcast.net/jfreeman246/index.htm This is the most informative work I have seen on the subject on the web. Go down about 1/2 page and click on the country of origin link. this is what I was talking about being common at gunshows fake underfolders aka "contraban" If it is stamped 156S-1 it is a postban in preban clothes.

| correct me if i am wrong, but there are definately some pre-ban Mak-90. they were imported from 1990- sept.1994. they were imported without evil features, but could have been converted back to evil feature configuration until sept 1994. i believe the 1989 import ban has the parts count rule, so as long as it was followed they would be pre-ban mak-90. of course you would need documentation of being done before sept 1994 |
|
All MAK-90 and NHM-90/NHM-91 rifles are post-89 ban. Pre-94 ban doesn't really count. It would have had to had 6 US parts in it, and in "assault weapon configuration", PRIOR to September 14th 1994, to be considered exempt from the '94 AWB. Good luck documenting something like that... |

Wow, thats pretty informative. Bayo lug = pre ban, makes sence but are there any kits sold with the lugs still on the barrel? Now it another one of my post there was a mention of a war bring back, what are the rules on those? Is it still posable for military personel to still bring back Aks and the like or would that have been cut off too by th 89' ban? |
|
Military bring back AK's would be selective fire, and that was banned from importation in 1968. There are VERY few LEGAL military bring back AK's, and most of them are Chinese and Russian, but I do know of one Romanian underfolder that was brought back from Vietnam, but it was registered as a Russian rifle. |
|
So were the only post ban Aks they imported Macs? all the ak's sold since '89 have been and are post-ban variants. the chinese sold both norinco mak-90's, mak-91's, bwk-92's, hunters and a variety of ak model derivations as post-ban rifles. they also sold several versions of poly technologies ak's as post-ban rifles. |
