hello. i have a couple ar's but,im new to ak type rifles and wanted to purchase a reliable well built ak/variant. ill be learning more about them as i go along and will probably be modifiying them in the near future. the local shops have a few for sale: 1.russian sks for $375 2.mak90 for $395 3.mak91 for $695 4. romanian ak for $380 all of these are the 7.62 cal. which one would you pick and why? any help is greatly appreciated. thank you. |

The prices do seem a bit high, but then again, you're in Hawaii - I imagine shipping is fairly expensive. See if you can't get them cheaper by buying wholesale and transferring. However, you can at least handpick what's in your local gunstore, and if something is wrong you can bring it back there. How much would shipping be back to AIM or whoever? |

Look at the Romanian. Is it labeled SAR-1? Are the rear and front sights canted or do they line up as they should? Is the gas tube canted or does it line up as it should? Does the action cycle manually as it should--ie smoothly? Check the bore? I guess given the options you describe I would favor the SAR-1. |

I went throught he Romy/MAC debate a few weeks ago... Went with the SAR-1, and at least for the recent ones, all of the major problems are gone... No cant, no mis-matched sights, etc... There was some trigger slap (but not enough to be a problem with leather gloves on, as it was cold when I shot it. The only reason I noticed it was firing a few with a bare trigger hand from mag loading), even after cutting off the tab on the disconnector, but further dremel-work seems to have fixed that (as tested by hand-working the action after dry-firing and holding back the trigger)... Or you can go the 'easy, but more expensive route' and get the RSA adjustable trigger instead of dremeling yours... |

cb69:thanks for the info, ill see if the shop will sell the mak90 for 350. i thought the mak91 price was high also but wasnt too sure. gman: its probably one of the very few downfalls of living in hawaii in that we cant just drive somewhere to find what we need. would you happen to have the link to aim? shipping may not be to expensive($20-40 ups) but the shops charge around $75 to transfer firearms. drjarhead: im not sure what it is labeled, ill head down today to take a look at it. its on the way to the range. last defender: money is not really an object but id like to keep it under 600 for a nice ak with some extra mags and ammo. bananaclip: thanks for the advice dave A: how recent does it need to be to have the probs fixed? and would you happen to have a link/price on the adj. trigger? thank you very much to everyone that replied. |

eo12, Here's the link to AIM Surplus (SAR rifles) in Ohio: www.aimsurplus.com/acatalog/rilfes.html $75.00 for a transfer??! Ack! Oh, well, it's like getting food at the airport, once you're past the security checkpoint, they've got you by the short and curlys... Replacement triggers: Red Star Arms www.redstararms.com/index.htm?catalog.htm&1 Gordon Tech (from AK-USA) www.ak-103.com/ or TAPCO www.tapco.com/product_list.asp?dept=190&last=13 FSE at www.rpbusa.com/ak.html or TAPCO. HTH. |

ditto's on the redstar FCG. Excellent trigger. I've got 2 MAK-90's and an SAR-1. MAK's are very nice rifles. One reason to lean towards the SAR, though, is that it is easier to get parts and do mod's. My experience, anyway. If you buy the MAK I'm sure you'll be happy with it though. Mine are well constructed and shoot great. |

i went down to one of the shops today. the romanian is a wasr. is that the same as a sar1? im going to check out the other 3 tomorrow morning. the wasr had dark red furniture and the sight and gas block looked straight. they also had a russian saiga that they said is an ak47 without the pistol grip. is that rifle any good? so far im leaning towards the mak90, if its in good shape. thanks gman for the links ill check it out asap. rs39, id prefer the 7.62 due to the ammo being really cheap and we are allowed to hunt pigs with it. |

" went down to one of the shops today. the romanian is a wasr. is that the same as a sar1?" NO! It started life as a lo-cap, single stack mag AK for about $100 less than a SAR, then someone opened the mag well more to accept hi-cap mags. They may or may not have done a decent job of modifying the feedlips in addition to the well opening. An AK amature should stay away from a WASR IMO. I'd go MAK90 next. And load up on Barnual 125gr SP or Wolf 154gr SP. And a Kobra would make for really nice fast target sighting :) |
