A buddy of mine has an AK variant with the lable "ROMAK99M" on the side.

I've got an SAR1 with a bunch of mags and a 75 round drum.

He wanted to try out my drum, to which I said sure.

My chinese drum didn't fit inside his mag well.  In fact, after measuring it, my mag well is just about an inch and his is about 5/8, give or take.  My mags stagger the 7.62X39 rounds, his are single file.

Given my extremely limited knowledge of AK variants, could someone enlighten me on this?  So I can enlighten him?

Thanks.

He has the cheaper version of the SAR1. Only accepts single stack magazines up to 10rds. Tell him to buy a SAR1 next time if he wants to use hi-cap mags.

ah hah.  I see.  What do these cheap POS' go for?  Do they offer hi cap mags or is he SOL.

It doesn't suprise me that he'd have a cheaper version of an AK, that same philosophy spills over into his love life too!

lol

Any more info though is helpful, thanks!

Around 170-200 dollars. As far as I know, you can NOT get a larger mag than 10 rounds. No such thing as hi-cap mags for a none-hi-cap AK, why else would you spend 100+ more dollars on a hi-cap AK? It's possible to mod the mag well to accept hi-cap megs I think (some hi-cap AK's you can buy were once low-cap and modded into hi-cap), but don't think it's easy to do.

hmm...interesting.  Well, I'll see him on Sunday.  I'll just inform him that his POS variant will never see a mag with more than 10 rounds.

If you dremel the mag well wider and build up the feed ramps properly, a single stack AK can be made to work well for hi-caps. But there are many AKs where a vendor bought the $100 cheaper one (usually a WASR model), did a half assed job to make it a hi-cap, and sold someone a headache.

hmm, I see.  Probably not worth the effort when you could get an SAR1 for 300-400 retail.

Thanks again for the education.

You buddy is already in possession of the gun correct? He can easily have someone convert it to hi-cap no problemo.

SO literally take a dremel tool to the well and grind/sand to fit?  I'm sure he'd opt to do that if he could.
