I'm looking into purchasing a Romainian AK-47 (SAR-1 I believe), and I was wondering what to look for. I heard a few things about the trigger being bad. What exactly is trigger slap? I've also heard a few instances in which the gun will get stuck in a full-auto burst, even though they are supposed to be semi-auto. Is there any truth to these statements? What can remedy these situations? What else should I look for when I find one to buy? Should a NIB be in perfect condition or are they refurbished? Thanks, Ben |

lars, "and I was wondering what to look for." when visually inspecting a prospective sar-1, look first to see that the sights and gas block are mounted straight. this can be done by simply staring the rifle down from both ends with care. the human eye is a wonderful measuring tool. second, work the action back and forth. it should be relatively smooth, with no hangups or binding to be felt. third, inspect all rivets for a tight set and the optic mounting rail is flat against the receiver wall. fourth, cosmetically inspect the metal and wood wor fitup at all joints and for a reasonable level of finish quality. none of the sar's are custom built beauty queens...but, at the same time, some are finished nicer than others. "I heard a few things about the trigger being bad." the oem fire control parts will get you by for awhile, but in all honesty they are pretty nasty. even the best century trigger is only marginal in terms of feel and quality/durability. here, you are better off resigning yourself to chucking them in the trash and replacing them immediately. this will improve your ak expirience and save you aggravation in the long run. redstararm and gordon both make trigger parts that are light years improved over the oem parts. "What exactly is trigger slap?" this is a condition caused by improper geometry of the oem hammer, trigger and disconnector. as the rifle is being cocked by the gas driven recoil, the hammer drives into the disconnector. the disconnector, lacking proper clearance with the trigger, drive the trigger forward..."snapping" your trigger finger in a painful fashion. "I've also heard a few instances in which the gun will get stuck in a full-auto burst, even though they are supposed to be semi-auto." i have, personally, never heard of this happening...although i have heard of the disconnector bouncing and a few rifles thus doubling or tripling. again, the cause is due to poor quality fire control parts. "Is there any truth to these statements? What can remedy these situations?" a redstararms or gordontech trigger parts set will cure those ills. "What else should I look for when I find one to buy?" a price no higher than $350...and the closer to $300 the better. "Should a NIB be in perfect condition or are they refurbished?" nib. |

A word about triggers: I have a GTech FCG in my Bulgie 74 and it is a very nice trigger, smooth, crisp. But you can improve your SAR1 stock trigger by polishing the contact surfaces. Do not remove material. I took Brasso and a Q-Tip and polished the mating surfaces, also the trigger and hammer pins. Trigger slap can be cured or drastically reduced to a minimum by a mod to the disconnector. I don't have the link to the mod instructions with pics, maybe someone else can help there. Just some tips to maybe save ya some bucks! Well there ya go! Looks like the trigger slap mod pics have been taken care of!!! LOL!! |
