I am hoping for some suggestions from some of the more informed folks here. I am not a collector, law enforcement, or hard core suvivelist I am a mental health worker that enjoys firearms. I have been playing with black rifles for the past couple of years (once I found out how to build AR's I was in trouble) Last summer on a lark I bought a VEPR K and I love it with the exception of its weight. Recently I built myslef a "Tactical Lightweight AR" that I like a lot. Is there a AK counter part of this concept? I have a budget that cuts off about 850... Any ideas?

Think Krink...

a hot-rod saiga in .223 might be your ticket to fun.

rework and parts should add about $450 onto the cost of the sub-$200 saiga. add on some lightweight polymer furniture, cut the bbl. to 14" plus a lightweight brake. sub-7 lbs. is doable.

the krink is the ultimate license to thrill. $200 sbr tax stamp on a $650 krink rig (troy at inrange should be starting another batch of krinkovs soon). and you have a mini ak well worth the effort of having a kit built and the fed-paperwork hassle.

OK I have narrowed it down a bit, and stretched the budget some. I am looking at a either a Krebs build or an AK-USA build. I have just seen the KTR-03 wich is advertised as 6.5 pounds and the AK-USA Krink look alike. Both guns look very nice on the computer both vendors seem to have a good reputation. I would love to hear from folks who have done business with either firm. I have one question in particular regarding delivery time
I have a major personal flaw in that if you tell me it will be 8 weeks at 7.5 weeks I get anxious, at 9 weeks I am intolerable. Does either firm keep to their delivery dates?

Best bet if you are in the custom AK market is to be patient. Building an AK take a lot of skill that is not required on an AR. MOST builder like to keep as close as possible to promised dates, but unforeseens do come up. I would pick the one that appeals to me best, then pass your time away here in out friendly forum!

In either case, you will need to be patient and be willing to extend that "intolerable" threshold time limit. I don't mean years, or even many month. I know that sometimes things can happen, and you'd have to be willing to let 30-60 days slip if needed. Otherwise the pressure on yourself and the builder will cause problems.

THanks guys I appreciate the feedback. Its funny I hve found over the years that if I know what to expect I manage my anxiety better. Particularly around money and guns. It was a "it will be there in two more weeks" With ar 4 letter Ar manafacturer that went on for 20 plus weeks (never got the rifle either) that has left me so anxious. In any case I have never seen a negative comment about either firm so I will drive on.

Go Stamped instead of milled.. That is the only true weight reduction in an AK.

SAR1.
ACE tube stockset.
ACE FAL type PG.
Plastic furniture..
That is about the lowest weight besides the afore mentioned 223 which is not much more reduction between the calibers in fully loaded 30 rounders...
