Is there a source for PreBan receivers for AKs?I know there not as plentifull as AR receivers but can they be found without buying a complete rifle?I want an underfolder but dont want to pay the 1000 or so to get an underfolder. Can they be found or would I be wasting my time looking for one?Thanks,45B10

Don't think you'll find any but even if you did it is technically illegal to build an assault weapon unless it is already in that configuration and has been so since prior to sep/94. If you could find one it would not be cheap and with the additional cost of building you'd be better of simply buying a preban.

You might want to check the legal forum.

I know the legalitys of buying one.Wouldnt be any different than buying a preban AR lower(someone parting a rifle out) that wasnt a whole rifle when you bought it.Must have been built into a rifle  prior to ? and all that.Ive found several rifles that are pre 94 and correct me if Im wrong but it would actually have to been before 89 to be a PreBan AK right?Thats what Ive been told here anyway.Legal issues aside.Really just wondering if they can be found.

Yes, must be pre '89.  But, what drjarhead stated is right on the money, "with the additional cost of building you'd be better of simply buying a preban."  This is 100% true - to my knowledge no one imported only a receiver - only recently have US manufacturers started making AK receivers (excluding B-West [maybe]), and there is stil no US source for AK barrels even.  Prior to '89 a Chinese underfolder AK could be had used for $275 or less.  There was absoluetly no need to import parts back then as the complete weapon didn't cost that much at all.  The only supposed preban receivers I've ever heard of were some that were manufactured by B-West in Tucson, AZ(I have never been 100% clear on whether or not they were making AK receivers before the '89 ban).  But, here again, not manufactured into a complete rifle prior to '89 ban.  I avaoided these even though they were offered at a pretty good price.  You may save a little if you were to find a pretty beat up full-stock and then have it converted to an underfolder and refinished - but even here you're probably better off just buying a preban underfolder.

AKs were brought into the country as complete guns.  If you came across a pre-89 receiver you can do whatever you want with it because you can bet your ass that it used to be an assault rifle.

I guess there were some pre-ban US made AK receivers, but from what I hear they were total shit.

It's always possible to find a used-up beater preban AK to use as a base to build any configuration of semi-auto AK you want. Even a beater preban can cost well over $500, worn out.

It would still be cheaper to buy a collectors grade, New In Box, Hungarian or Chicom folder. Look long enough and you can get one for a fairly decent price.

Sometimes you get lucky and can find a Yugo or Valmet folder for a reasonable price (UNDER $1200) but not often.
