Have a pretty simple question...... I have a post ban Saiga 7.62 X 39 which is basically AK with vinyl sport stock. Does have a flash suppressor but does not have a pistol grip or bayonet lug. It came with a 10 round mag. Pre-ban high cap mags are easily modified and work nice. My understanding of the assault weapon laws is that is OK. Is it?????? |

NO -NOT LEGAL! In order to convert a post ban IMPORT gun to accept high capacity mags, it must have no more than 10 imported parts as defined by a list from the BATF. That's why you see all of the 10 round single stack AKs. SARs and Veprs have US parts installed to be in compliance. High cap Saigas require 5 parts to be replaced with US ones. Usually the best way to do this is to convert it to a pistol grip configuration like Tec Nine is doing. Buy a US buttstock, US pistol grip, and a US fire control group and there's your five parts. Post ban M1-A's are okay because they are domestically produced and are not inported. Pain in the ASS and dumb as hell, ain't it? |

MY GOD! I have this vision of explaining to the fed at the range....."This is US made..This is US made....This is US made..." What are we coming to.............You have this constitutional right except......I don't remember signing that!!!!! Just in case, follow-up question....Do Mag components count...Mags I have have US followers and springs. Can I count that as two parts.......... Tell you how lame I am, I bought the rifle hoping it would have some simblence of a long gun. It was sported by Saiga as a deer rifle. Acuracy sucks typical AK acuracy. In fact, my 50cal cheap "sweetwater" ball & cap does better. I would like to use as a large caliber plinker classic AK use. Or I could just keep in the safe till war hits the US mainland, not likely. Guess I should have stuck with my 5.56mm's except no deer LOL. Still would like to have the shotgun though, unless theres some new save the skeet clays movement. |

Mag components DO count. :) In my opinion, the feds that you would encounter don't know squat about the actual legalities. I think the only way you would get burned for an illegal rifle would be if you got nailed for something else and the BATF decided to comb through your collection hoping to find something else. I know a lot of cops and they don't have a clue, even about the '94 ban, and they really don't care anyway. |

Thanks MRW. I've been shooting all my life and also know lot's of cops and know you are right. Still don't like the stupid law though.....and it's the DA's/politicians you gotta look out for. We don't like your politics so we lock you up for weapons violations...........Huh? That's sounds familiar. Sorry I'm sarcasitc by nature. |
