Ok I locked the old post because it was 6 pages long and mostly a conversation based around what you would like to see out of the project... In a few days we will be revealing the specifics of this project. All I can say at this time is that you SHOULD get very excited for what is coming. This project will be something VERY special and that you wont want to miss out on it. You also will want to thank the great efforts of those responsible. For the time being (while you drool in anticipation), I will leave you to harass the two parties who are making this a reality... Gary Gucciano and Red Star Arms. It's been great working with them and I look forward to getting the "party" started. [=D] |

IMHO the first LEGP AR15 was a "here's a great first AR15" purchase. Somewhere in the mid-600's for a great all purpose AR15. Now, if the first LEGP AK47 clone ends up being a great "entry level, yet still sweet" AK varient, I'm all over it. I'd need 7.62 with possibly an upgraded trigger group on a hand picked SAR-1. I'm thinking probably in the late $300 to early $400 range, with a few preban mags thrown in. Anything more than that and you're catering to the "I have 4 AK variant and want a special AK crowd." Not that that is wrong, just expect a lower turn out and less newbies joining in. I've seriously been considering an SAR-1, but will not spend more than $500 for an AK at this point. That should probably include tax, tip, FFL and my first case of Wolf 7.62 too.... I'm hoping that this is a "bring everyone on board" LEGP and not a "gimme something special" buy. The guys who are diehard AK dudes prolly have their milled blah blah blah. The rest of us simply need to get hooked on AK's. That's not going to happen with a $450-750 AK. Don't wanna burst your bubble, but is this about generating interest in the AK board or making a cheaper high end AK? Sounds to me like it might be a collectors piece, so I don't have my hopes up. Otherwise.... |

This is starting to peeve me. When in the blue hell are you folks going to tell us? At least give us an idea about a make or model. I understand this stuff takes a heap of time to get together, but at least tell us the type: 5.45 Krink, 7.62 RPK, 7.62 AKM or whatever. That would help us a great deal, and you'll instantly find out how many takers you'd REALLY have. themao

RotDorn: Thanks for the reply. That's kind'a what I thought. I've been wanting an AK type for a while, but something else AR or handgun related ends up getting the priority. Was hoping that this would be my incentive to break into the AK world (the Dark Side? But your thoughts pretty much echo mine. This will probalby be as expensive as a NIB BM AR15. Seems like a different goal than the 2001 LEGP AR15. Too bad, IMHO. The first one should've been the Chevy version, then the BMW's the next year. |
Give up the extra $100-150. It'll probably be the best money you ever spend. Like he says, quality does have its price, and getting a similar AK on your own would cost you far more. Anyway, Goatboy says it'll be something EVERYONE can afford and enjoy. Start saving your change ![]() |
The first hint of what is to come? This could be very good news. Of course, if I decide this rifle is for me I'll prolly end up talking my way up to the higher priced model. I always do, just ask my wife. |
Ya think?? Now cough up some more info, RSA VP. |
|
A basic idea of what configurations are being discussed doesn't seem like it should be so difficult to communicate. How about possible styles? Furniture? Blah blah blah.....what's the deal already?!? How about some information? There are people here willing to spend hundreds on this product....is asking for some , any information asking too much? I appreciate the work involved, but come on, this doesn't need to be treated like a matter of national security. |
Like I said before, I always end up talking myself into high end stuff. I was kind'a hoping that my first AK would be a beater. The last thing I need is another gun to clean. You know, kind of a "goes bang every time" trunk gun. But something tells me that one thing might lead to another and even the low end model will be a prized possession. I need to start saving my $.... |
LOL! I'd settle for one! We'll see what's offered and if I'm in a position to do anything. Like I said, an AK has always fallen off my "to do" list because of other projects. A friend just brought over another cool toy this weekend and I'm drooling over one of those. Funny how this list never gets any shorter....

.........me thinks this whole project is bogus. I thinks the powers that be behind this project are still trying to figure out what an AK really is. Let alone what it looks like or what parts to put on it. Now taking bets. Which will come first , this legp project or me finding a girlfriend? Mark |
|
Towman, You have an interesting personality. :) Have we met? I'm thinking that you were with Campy at KCR last spring. If so, thanks for the beer. Yes, Gary is still trying to figure out what an AK is. Last I heard, he had figured out that it is a hell of a lot like some German late war gun that he had come across, but without the AR mag release and with a lot fewer parts inside. :) Charles |
|
Any idea on the time frame? I don't want to BS myself or any of you on this one. Got a few other commitments/projects on the burners ahead of this one and need to know if we're talking spring of 2003 (probably doable) or October (probabaly not). EDITED to add: Oh yeah, and it'd be nice to know what we're lining up to buy. And how much we need to stuff aside for it. Still thanks for your efforts. |
| I am VERY interested in breaking into the AK world. It would have to be pretty inexpensive for me to get in on this deal though (and I managed to scrape up enough for all the other LEGP's). Any way you can tell us about how much to set aside (more Top Ramen - I am almost to the point of liking it now) and a time frame for this project? |
Garsh that is the most polite thing anyone has ever said about me or my personality. No sir we haven't met although I am sure you wouldn't forget if we did meet up! (Try as you might) My claim to fame is the ability to bust one case of clays with one case of ammo at 25 yards (purdy good shootin if I do say so myself). Of course that was achieved with a scoped rifle and using match grade ammo. Other than that I have no real talents. By the way you guys lost the bet. That's right "I have a girlfriend" and I don't even have to inflate her. As far as looks she is HOT . One of the guys on this site knows her. That's all I am tellin for now. Mark |
|
If it isn't annoyingly obvious by now, nobody involved seems to care to discuss anything about the AK config./price/date. An "unusual" marketing approach. "Hey, Ford is coming out with a new car. Can't tell you if it's a sedan, or a coupe or a convertable though. Price? Can't discuss that, or even the possible range. Specs....HP, speed, design? Nope. Just thought we'd tell you a car might come out...but it's a new one, and we hope you'll line up eagerly interested anyway." Come on....what is the deal? |
|
Having been told that RSA and Informer are involved, that is all the info I need to say: I'M IN! Anybody that saw the rifle DonR won at the BRC knows exactly what I'm talking about. Wave has a nice one too. It will cost a little more, but if the weapons these guys have produced in the past are any indication, it will be WELL worth it! All I need is a time frame so I can start saving my pennies! |
YEAH! WHAT HE SAID! Time frame, please. slider |
We know it'll be quality, but we want to know what type it will be though. The BRC rifle was a RPK, and I'm not interested in one of those. I want an AKM patterned rifle or a .223 AK-74. I already have a SAR-2 in 5.45x39 that I need to have the muzzle brake installed on. I guess those folks could do it for me. themao

All I need to know now is the chambering. If it's a thirty cal. I'm out. Got plenty. If it's a 5.45 I am 99% for sure in. But my 700 .308 still needs a more powerful Leupold and at some point I'm just going to become more interested in it and wander off in that direction. My attention span has not increased with age. |

ok! here's the skinny... it will be an akm receiver...and the furniture will be carbon fibre with a directional weave. the lower handguard will feature an ak-74 palm swell with a 28 lines per inch grid style checkering, double line edged. mojo sights will be standard, with a diopter correction of ±4 diopters. finish will be gloss black over zinc phosphate parkerizing with manganese phosphate pivot pins. receivers will be engraved, "campyclone mkI" nitrided and teflon coated century trigger groups will be used with a hand lapped trip surface. the standard muzzle brake will be the magnaported ak-109, with a baffled slant comp as an option. the gas piston will be chrome vanadium steel with a gold titanium nitride surface treatment for wear resistance. the front sight pin will be ground to .042" (square) and tipped with matte white paint. the receiver cover is tentatively going to be a smooth ak-74 type without the porch. selector markings will be done in cyrilic. aluminum heat shields will be installed under the kevlar guards. the com-bloc scope rail will be standard...only in this case, eccentric rivets are being used to allow user tuned alignment. optic options, so far, include the 7zpn-4 target scope (3-9 variable, with stadia lines, height based range finder, infrared detector and charcoal grey hammertone finish...sunshade and anti-glare polarized filter with kit bag) and the favorite pso-4 in belarus configuration with ballistic cam set. of course, you kobra fans have not been forgotten, either. if the timing is right, the new, 3rd gen, kobra will be ready for shipment with your rifle! this model (i have only heard the highlights here..forgive me) has finer knob resolution, a lightened (skeletonized?) frame, wider field of viewing and a choice of 3 new dots, including a 'u', an improved '^' and lastly, the battlefield proven 'E'. an nfa option to c2's for pmds's will also be offered. a commemorative buttplate, with the site logo and contributing builder's signatures (backfilled in electroless nickel) is in the works at additional cost (sorry...figure at least $80 for this one.). calibres planned are: initial release in 7.62x39 and 5.45x39. as a site special, .50 beowolf belted short magnum is now thru testing and if you can stand the recoil, we are offering it. i expected the order quantity for this one to be under 20...but if you want one...better let me know early (special steel was ordered to make the bbl. blanks from in order to handle the pressure). there is still some discussion as to whether a green light will be given to the .500 jeffries version, offered with express sights only. all rifle will ship with one mag, finished to match the rifle, leather slings (nice touch!) and a full color owner's manual. again, this will be autographed by all the pricipals involved with the project. packaging will be in a printed box, featuring mikhail kalashnikov's lithographed photo, holding his akm. this box will be shipped in a protective sleeve, in order to preserve it...as collectibility is sure to increase. shipping will be to your ffl only, and i must have a signed in blue ink copy in my possession at time of order. shipping will be thru usps and insured for purchase price plus 5%. did you really believe this? |
