Totally Different guns, but which is the best quality/ value at the moment? Looking to buy one of the two. Thoughts? on a 2nd note- I'm a lefty shooter and I always worry about the case ejection.

It seems like the newer WASR10's are by far the best bang for your buck. They are imported by Century and not built by them. If I was looking for another AK, I would not hesitate to buy a WASR10 (I already have 3).

vz58's ejection pattern may be a little more comfortable for you.

Both pretty good valued rifles, every vz58 I've seen is a littlle nicer fit and finish wise though.

I do like that the VZ58 has a milled receiver. That's pretty cool

Have you shot either one of them? Really the only thing the vz58 has in common with an AKM is the 7.62x39 round. vz is milled receiver, striker fired, safety is on the other side of the gun. when it fires the "ejection port" is massive and the round basically ejects straight into the air. Magazines are different. Mag release is off the side rather than right down the middle. Short stroke gas piston rather than a long stroke.

If you don't already have an AK, get the WASR10. Magazines are easier to get and there is more knowledge base around them / parts etc. If you already have an AK and want something different get the vz58.

My opinion, worth what you paid for it.

The only 7.62x39 rifle I own and have shot is a SKS. I was looking at AK's then MAC on military arms channel just a couple days ago did his review of the VZ58 (czechpoint though) and it peaked my interest because it looks like a very well made firearm for the price. I'm looking at the CAI sidefolder vz58 Atlantic has for sale at the moment. Being a lefty I do like that the safety is on the left side. Also the Czechpoint he reviewed has the slot for stripper clips just like my SKS. I don't now if the CAI version does though.

Here is a review from a lefty:

I think the vz58 is cool, but for me, I'd still go with the WASR10 first.

Just to clarify, the Century rifles are VZ-2008s. All parts are interchangeable with VZ-58s but typically if you refer to VZ-58s I'm assuming you're talking the ones made by Czechpoint which are priced around $1k.

I've had both a WASR-10 and a VZ-2008 for several years now. The VZ is lighter, slimmer, lower recoiling & more accurate with the same ammo vs. the WASR. But doesn't have nearly the same amount of aftermarket stuff. Or sub $100 drums.

Surplus VZ mags are still running around $15 and I believe they were all made in the same place so there doesn't seem to be any variance. And there's some polymer aftermarket mags available. Mako just released some. No aftermarket 20 round mags, factory 20s are VERY rare based on what I've read.

Czechpoint has every replacement part available so as long as they still import you're good. Tons of vendors sell AK parts.

I think the VZ-2008s were a great bargain when they were $400 w/mags & accessories. But today I'm seeing them used going for over $600 or the same price as a new WASR. SO I guess it really depends upon whether you want a rifle that's well suited for precise range use or something that is easy to maintain & customize.

OK, i'm willing to spend up to $800 on a rifle. I like to buy things that are built well and that will last. I do shoot frequently, maybe 300-400 rds a month. The WASR seems to be a good value and then i'd have money left over for aftermarket parts. Or would I be better off  buying something better than a WASR right off the bat?

$800 is a reasonable budget. I'd buy the wasr10. If it doesn't come with it, get a russian surplus sling. 10 steel magazines. Then buy a bunch of ammo. Enjoy. After a while you may find things you like better or different and have more working knowledge of the AK to better make a second or third purchase.

AK's typically throw the brass forward so you shouldn't have too much of an issue with that as a lefty. $800 is enough to get you into some of the older ban era imported guns like a SA-85m, MAK-90, SAR-1, or Maadi. I've shot plenty of WASRs and they always work fine, it's just the quality control can sometimes be a little lacking and the finish is rough compared to some of the other rifles on the market. If you buy one try to find one locally so you can inspect it first.

Always good if you can do that. Here is a video of Jim Fuller telling you what to look for when you are checking an AK out.

Indeed. The Century VZ2008s always seemed to be hit or miss (I've never owned one). That was fine when retailers like PSA were selling them with a load of mags and accessories for $400, but it doesn't sound like the one you're looking at is $400. I'm willing to gamble with $400; any more than that and I'd just spend the extra cash and get a Czechpoint. If you don't want to spend $1200 on a potentially-passing whim, grab the WASR. Also, Atlantic appears to have a special on the NPAP: rifle + four mags + sling + free shipping, all for $629. That's kind of a stupidly good deal. If you intend to leave the wood on the rifle, the NPAP is the superior rifle IMHO.

Pretty much been covered by everyone above.

Best value is your WASR, great parts availability.  Best quality, Czechpoint vz. 58 and it's a great little design too.

Vz58 over Wasr-10 any day.  I had a D-technik produced vz58 that CZ USA used to import and it was a fantastic rifle.  They are more expensive than a Wasr but man they are solid and lightweight and just shoot wonderful.  I was stupid and sold it so I could get out from under 7.62x39.  That didn't last long cause I ended up with a Wasr this year which I'm really impressed with but I miss the VZ real bad.
