Is the rate reducer a mandatory part in full auto AKs? Will it malfunction without it? And do AK74 rifles have the rate reducer, or just AKM rifles?

No

No, but you have to fill the space in the trigger that it leaves behind so that the disconnector doesn't wander.

Yes, they do. You can tell by the receiver "bump" near the trigger guard.

No the rate reducer is not a must have item but was added to stamped AKM rifles to slow down the cyclic rate of auto fire, it is sometimes called a hammer retarder, and as far as I know I don't think it was installed on ak 74 guns..  A really clever system to reduce hammer speed...

Yes, they are. They're even included with AK-74 parts kits.

That's why the early, & all milled AK's have the double hook trigger. When they converted to single hook, the rate reducer replaced the right  hook that's no longer there. Since Chinese guns are all still double hook, they never used the rate reducer on their milled, or stamped guns.  GARY

I think I would install a rate reducer in my AK if I used the bumpski bumpfire stock that simulates full auto.
