Guys is it better to mount a red dot on top of dust cover with the side mount or on gas tube mount? My concern with gas tube mount is it would get hot and far down the sights Side mount: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v613/Tim_Orrock/Arsenal%20SLR-106FR/V3/P1060651.jpg Gas tube mount http://i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z328/sprawlcowboy/20140923_135615.jpg The heat shouldnt hurt a quality red dot. Having said that I like using the side rail. I tend to prefer the MI mount over the RS due to it being one piece and more rigid. More weight though. |

I like micro red dots on an Ultimak tube and full sized red dots on a side mount over the receiver. Most people have their own opinion on this subject, there is no truly definitive answer on this. This ^^^... it really depends on the size of the RDS and preference of the rifle's owner. Some will like the larger RDS more forward or back depending how they like the overall balance of the rifle. Run it both ways and find what works for YOU, then go with that. The smaller RDS mounted forward is almost unnoticeable from a balance standpoint and doesn't tend to give the "tunnel vision" effect of mounting it so close to your eye like a traditional scope IMHO. |

Agreed, the heat won't hurt a quality optic. I've tried. I'm an Ultimak guy. I like my AK's to be tough. Most side mounts look like they would snap/bend if you dropped the rifle or caught the optic on something. RS Regulate test. |

I'm certainly not trying to start anything. But I've heard a couple of guys say thier RS has moved when dropped. Maybe they didn't tighten it enough?
I really was on the verge of buying one but the MI mount is one, built like a tank, piece. I absolutely know it isn't going to move. It's just one less thing on my mind. Of course the downside is some people say thier MI mounts aren't straight with the bore. The RS allows one to fix this. The modularity if the RS is nice too. I personally like the piece of mind of a solid piece of metal. That's all. :) |

I think im leaning more towards gas tube. Thoughts on troy AK tube? https://4b1e874935ea5d25a97e-f099844d0e354c7ab50c55a966be6870.ssl.cf2.rackcdn.com/product/XTSRAIAK1TOBT00.jpg The answer is always never Troy. The good news is, in this case, the Ultimak is better so there is no question. |

Not exactly mount related OP, but here is good info. on setting up your RDS for BSZ...

I have a RS Regulate mount and I love it. Same here. Love it. I had a Ultimak on my Yugo underfolder and it was ok. Sold that gun so it is gone. I really like my RS Regulate II on my newest AK. I also have a K-Var - 04S side mount but I don't like it near as much as the RS Regulate. The K-VAR 04-S sits too high over the top cover. The RS Regulate sits very low over the top cover. For my money, from now on, it will be the RS Regulate. The RS Regulate seems to lock up tighter than the K-VAR does as well. The RS Regulate is a much better design IMHO. :-) |

| I've tried my TRS-25 red dot on both a side mount and above the gas tube. Side mount balances better but the weight of a TRS-25 isn't much. I prefer over the gas tube, I can acquire a target faster and I'm not blocking the receiver cover so cleaning & clearing malfunctions is easier. |

I use both options and honestly not sure there is a right answer.
The RS regulate quick release mount is incredible in terms of literally sliding it on and off the rifle for any reason. I've been meaning to test the zero now after a couple years of relatively light use and lots of taking on and off while using a PA red dot. Have no reason to believe it's shifted at all. I also have an SGL 21 that uses the Ultimak and TRS-25 combo, and its the most accurate AK I've ever seen, although granted I don't have a huge sample size. The ultimak is cheaper and just as good in terms of sight picture and is absolutely rock solid. The only downsides I think to the ultimak are that mounting can be a bit arduous making sure it's absolutely level with the four screw approach, and that there's not really a viable quick release option. However, these very very minor drawbacks I think are offset by the cowitness benefit. The side rail approach I believe can cowitness but not with every dot. My PA dot on the RS side mount is just a hair too high to cowitness properly. But then again, quick release, so who cares right? |
