I've always owned AR15's and am new to the AK world I've been looking at putting an MI railed hand guard on my MAK90 but knowing how hot the factory wood HG gets, I'm afraid that any aftermarket hand guard with a ton of vent holes would become too hot to hold. Am I thinking about this correctly or does the added ventilation actually speed cooling?
Thanks for the help. |

They do get hot, gloves or hold by the mag.
Much better choices than that MI piece, they make some decent products for AR's but their AK stuff leaves something to be desired. Take a look at the Alfa-rail handguard from Manticore, unlike the MI piece which is re-hashed AR stuff, the Manticore is made from the ground up for the AK, fit's the receiver without annoying gaps, well-designed and looks great. |

This is exactly the type of information I was after. Thank you. I'm thinking I may see what Magpul has to offer. I hope their handguard offering has the ability to mount an optic.

This. That big barrel clamp that MI uses seems like it would hold and gather heat alot faster over other rails. I would definitely check out the Alfa rail. That said, I don't think you can mount optics on magpuls handguards. You can use the ultimak along with the magpul handguard tho. |

I saw an Aimpoint Micro in the below pic. Scroll down and it's on the AK to the left. That's why I was curious.

My only issue with the Ultimak or any metal railed handguard is the heat produced by the gas tube will transfer directly to any optic I have mounted correct? I would think something like the Hogue would take care of the issue. My MAK doesn't have the hardware to accept a receiver mounted optics mount so I'm stuck with option 2.
