The Kalashnikov pattern has always been an ergonomic nightmare for me, especially the LOP with the Warsaw length stock and the 19th Century rear sight.
Today I installed a Canis adapter and Magpul Moe stock.  I knew going in that the irons would be an issue for me.  They were barely usable with original stock with the grenade pad.
Now the weapon shoulders like a dream but cannot get sights to align  properly unless I set rear sight to 500.
Assuming I leave the rear alone, would it be possible to zero using only front sight elevation adjustments?
Is there an option for a taller rear sight?
The SM-13 and red dot is not an option at this time, but is the ultimate goal.
Is there an economical option for a better rear sight?

AKs are zeroed by adjusting the front sight.

If the rear site is presenting that much of a challenge you may want to consider the possibility that you aren't using it right.

At the 500 meter setting there will be enough adjustment in the front sight pin?

I had to also use the 500 meter rear iron sight setting with my Red dot setup.  I was able to adjust the front sight up enough to get the group on at 25 yards (only had an indoor range) with 123gr. FMJ rounds, which puts the down range zero at about 150 yards (according to Winchester's Ballistic Calculator).
