I'm brand new to the Ak world.

Help me understand which gun to choose.

I was looking at the Arsenal SAM 7SF. Prefer a side or underfolder.

Decided to switch over from a AR for my main rifle.

Buy it.  Great choice.  Since you said for your "main rifle"

you're looking at the right thing....SAM 7SF is the only way to go if you're getting into the AK market right now

SLR-107 series is nice but for roughly the same amount of money you can get the SAM...no brainer in my opinion

Since you are new to the AK world, and want a folder, I will tell you that Underfolders, like the SAM7UF, are not a good first choice. They look Cool but have crappy cheek weld and the folding mechanism is prone to get loose after extended shooting. You also don't get a side scope rail.

A stamped receiver left side-folder, like the SLR-107FR, offers you the folding design that you want, while maintaining proper cheek weld. This rifle is a good choice. The main con is that you cannot fold the stock when utilizing the side scope rail. Some are also a little annoyed that after-market pistol grips look a little funny installed, due to the small pistol grip reinforcement plate, but this is minor.

A milled right-side folder, like the SAM7SF, offers you a solid cheek weld, while still allowing you to fold the stock with a scope rail attached. You also get the more robust milled receiver, which offers more torsional ridgidity and accuracy. The only real con is about 1 poiund more weight. You can also pick one up for as low as $1300 shipped from places like Ratworx.

There is a never-ending debate as to which is better (Stamped or Milled), but in reality, they are both good with pros and cons in terms of Weight, Accuracy, etc. I personally have both, and prefer one over the other, depending upon the specific caliber and design. Personally, if I could only have (1) full size 16" barrel 7.62x39 AK, it would be the SAM7SF, which is why I picked one up upon their initial release 9 months ago. Still no regrets. My 2nd choice would probably be the SLR-107FR.

Go for an Arsenal SLR-107 in a configuration that tickles you. The AK-100 series of folding stocks look like a fixed stock, feel like a fixed stock but fold when needed.  Pretty much the best of both worlds.

$1300 compared to $1000, not exactly the same amount of money.  I'd go with a SLR107 and get some ammo and mags with the difference.
