How much work would be involved  in converting a thumb hole stocked SLR96 into a preban appearing gun?  What all parts would be needed?  Is this something that would require a gunsmith?

Thank you ahead of time.

They are neutered, which means no barrel threads, no cleaning rod retainer under the FSB, no  bayonet lug and cleaning rod hole under the GB, no cleaning rod hole in the lower handguard retainer, and no lower tang on the bottom rear of the receiver. Therefore a correct Deban, would include removing the pinned on muzzle brake, replacing the FSB, GB, and lower handguard retainer with correct military versions. Then threading the barrel and installing a lower tang. All the parts accept for the lower tang are readily available at places like Apex, and Kvar sells the lower tangs. The bad news is that most thumbhole stock Bulgarian milled AK's do not have the bottom rear of the receiver milled out for a lower tang, so you or a builder must do it. It requires a hand file and some patience. I have done everything mentioned excluding the actual riveting of the tang to the receiver. I used a 12 ton shop press to remove the FSB and GB, and a hand threading kit to thread the barrel. Many people are understandalbly too overwhelmed by all that's entailed in a full Deban, so they just install a lower tang, swap out the furniture for a polymer pistol grip stock set, and call it a day. This still makes for a nice improvement.

In case you are interested, there is some info on imported milled Bulgarian AK's on this thread, to include a little info on the SLR-96 and similar SLR-95. I'm not sure who did it.

I took my original SLR95 and turned it into this. The SLR96 is basically the same rifle. What do you need to know?

Being milled, another option is to weld teh bottom tang on.

Check out command arms. They have stocks made for milled receivers that don't need the lower tang. I got one for my slr95 and it works beautifully.

Thanks....its a Mako GL-shock recoil reducing stock on a Command arms (CAA) 6 position tube made for milled receivers , it is awesome. Makes shooting the rifle feel like a glorified 22lr......I would suggest this setup to anyone who wants a collabsible stock on a milled AK

nice SLR 95 as well my man
