Quoted:
Its not from the hammer - it happens when the bolt carrier tail slams into the rear trunion. I put in a new recoil spring and a buffer because of it. The bolt carrier tail goes above the rear trunion. Take any AK, remove the recoil spring, and pull the bolt carrier all the way back until it hits the trunion.. you'll see the tail is above the trunion. |

The wear on the side of the bolt is from hitting the rear trunion. I get the wear on the sides from pulling the bolt carrier back too far when hand charging/cycling and hitting the trunion. |

What it looks like is paint over zinc parkerizing. It is probably a cheap/military grade paint that's rubbing off, which leads you to think of it has excess wear. Nothing to worry about. You can refinish it later easily with a more durable finish (molyresin, gunkote, duracoat, etc). Cheap rattle can duplicolor 1634 or even appliance epoxy seems to work nicely too. Just take your time.
Parkerizing is probably thin too. I hope that helps, I'm a bit OCD when it comes to my rifles finishes too. The AK platform I am learning generally isn't known to hold up to being a safe queen. |
| Caution, the tail is there to help prevent out of battery firing. If the carrier isn't completely closed the tail will keep the hammer from hitting the firing pin. I would monitor the wear so it doesn't get too excessive. The tail cocks the hammer you may want to check the hammer face for wear. |
