I just received my 2 slr104s today and when i went to take the flash hider off the first one the detent got stuck inside the sight post. Is there anything i can do to get it out short of punching the rivet? Yes i tried firing the weapon without the flash hider on to try and dislodge it but no luck.

Have you tried wrapping on the side with a plastic mallet? Not hard, just enough to set up some good vibrations.

I have a parts kit rifle with the same thing happening, and I found out it was the grease causing it to get stuck.
I used the hair dryer to heat up the FSB and it eventually popped out and never got stuck again, nothing further was done to it after heating it up with the hair dryer.
If it's still stuck, maybe use the mallet hitting the buttplate while heating the FSB up

Another thing you may try too, if you have an air compressor, is blast some air in the detent cavity, could force some of the gunk out.

An excellent idea. Ill give that a shot seeing as the mallet and heat didn't work.

Soak some bore cleaner in around it - it might pop out. Or, it could be stuck behind a little ridge at the face of the bore. Can you push it in more?

Yes it will recess a little more into the sight post. I thought it might be hung up as well but I sure cant find one.

How about using a nail set smaller than the detent hole, push down on the detent pin and attempt to get it to move a bit to realign with the hole if it isn't.  You must have pushed the detent way in which you don't need to if it now is way back in the FSB.

Its impossible for it to be short enough to be 'way back' in the bore. Its good that it can go back in a little because it shows that its not 'stuck' at all - there must be a ridge peened around the hole. I would stick a little round file in there and go around the hole with it to see if that will let it pop out. This will scratch up the face of the plunger but you can cold-blue it.

I would try wiggle it out with a paperclip, maybe the spring is seized up or something.

I don't know if even knocking out the front base pin will help you if none of our ideas work. You might be able to get something in the pin hole that you can dig at the plunger with. You know, you could drill into the face of the plunger, tap the hole, put a little screw in it and work it out. The plungers are pretty cheap if you have to replace it. If you can get it to pop out that way and have spring action, it wouldn't really matter that it has a threaded hole in it.

On the AK74 style front sight base the base pin does not retain the detent pin.  There is a separate rivet that hold it in from behind.  Maybe compressed air into the back of the hole will force it forward.

That's interesting. I didn't even notice it was a 74 and not a 47. :(

As soon as I get to the shop I'm going to try air first and then a small diamond file if that doesn't work. Thanks for all the advice and ideas.

From no update, I'm guessing something worked?

I had to take a small rat tail file to the walls surrounding the detent. All is well.
